Past Events That Got Me To Point "B" In Real Estate

That I would have a future in real estate was never a real consideration until I was 27 or so when myChange father and I bought an old Victorian with the intention of rehabbing and flipping it, the topic of a past post.  I had for a long time prior to that been interested in architecture; majoring in college at one point and business as well.  I also had a small remodeling and painting company with couple of life long friends.  At a younger age a friends mother who was a real estate broker thought I should become a real estate agent, but my head wasn't in the right place for that at 17, but never the less she planted the seed.

Anyway, back to the Victorian.  It took much longer to rehab that house than I originally estimated, but it turned out to be a huge learning experience and a turning point for me.  I learned a lot about construction and the buyer and sales process.  That's when the light went on that I would some how, some way be working in the world of real estate...I was hooked!

I already had a career in the Dental field that I really liked and felt I could continue to work at receiving a steady income while investing in real estate.  The problem was that I never wanted to lose the security that a steady job provided so working a steady job and devoting additional time to real estate was beginning to wear on me and which as I look back on was a mistake...I should have committed all my efforts to real estate much earlier.  It wasn't until later that I cut the cord and got an Appraisers License and while I liked the detailed nature of appraisal work, something was missing and that something was human interaction...working with buyers and sellers and making a real difference in their lives.  My friends mother's words came back to me and so back to school to become a real estate agent and broker.  I got licensed in Illinois and still maintain a managing brokers license there, however Huntsville Alabama is where I now live and work I'm a broker here as well with @Homes Realty Group and a Managing Broker for @HomesBirmingham.  It's been a long journey and a work still in progress, but I'm finally where I belong...the last place I'll ever work with NO plans to retire!

Nick-Yours was not a straight path to your real estate career. This is not usually a career choice that one dreams on becoming a part of. Did you make money on the Victorian?

Nick,

I can understand your fascination with the Victorian home. I can't think of anyone I grew up with in Chicago that also didn't feel the same way. You were quite the entrepreneur from an early age and it taught you a lot as a 17 year old man. Maybe you had paint in your eyes, or needed to breathe fresh and get out into the world first before becoming a Realtor but when you did, the sky was limits and you keep soaring!

You took your time, but you got there. I guess your friend's mom was very insightful. She saw it coming.

Great story Nick of coming full circle! Like you, I was afraid to jump right in and tried to do real estate part time...didn't work. Congratulations on being part of an industry that you love and plan to stay awhile...like forever!
