Coach Gus Bradley: Teaching Life Lessons with the Jacksonville Jaguars

So a couple nights ago I attended a casual dinner with the Men's Group of our parish.  We do this about every three months. Great food and great company.   Our guest speaker, and fellow parishoner, was our one and only Head Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Gus Bradley.  Now let me tell you, having previously been in the luxury hospitality business I have seen and listened to many speakers in my life.  Coach Bradley ranks right up there with the best.  He is animated, which is an understatement, funny, projects well (didn't need a microphone), engaging, connects with the audience, and has conviction.

Now, what did Coach Bradley talk about?  He talked about his philosophy and leadership style on and off the field, and he can tell you his philosophy in 20 words or less (I counted 17 words).  Because I did not ask permission to quote his philosophy I will simply give you its opening line:  "To have a genuine appreciation..."

For me, and probably many others at the dinner, three basic principles were highlighted by Coach Bradley:

  • Just Get Better
  • Humility
  • Servant Leadership

As these terms relate to the Jacksonville Jaguars:

Just Get Better-whether you win or lose a game, review the tapes, go with your coaches, identify your weaknesses, and go get better.  Notice, whether you WIN or lose, you do the same!

Humility-Don't revel in your success!  Appreciate and enjoy the success and appreciate ALL the people that contributed to that success, but don't revel.

Servant Leadership-just what it means, a good leader will serve and what better example of that than Mother Theresa!

These three principles are not reserved only for the Jaguars but rather can be utilized by everyone in all facets of life, business and personal.

I can probably write another few pages about this evening but then I would lose your attention!   I will tell you though, when I came home that night and handed my son an autographed football that said "To Will, Gus Bradley, Go Jags" the smile on his face was priceless!

If you are looking for a great speaker with a message, here is your man.  Whether or not he has the time though, is another story...good luck!

Thanks for reading and remember "to have a genuine appreciation..."!
