Commuters Are Spending More Time in Traffic

Ruining their Health and Deprciating their Automobiles

Commuters Are Spending More Time in Traffic

Approx. 10.8 million Americans travel an hour each way to work, and 600,000 more have a one-way commute of at least 90 minutes and 50 miles according to the US Census Bureau.

The average American commutes 25 minutes each way to work, but few Americans know just how much that time is worth.

Studies prove that driving long distances daily can have a negative impact  your health (high blood pressure, Diabites, Back Problems, Migranes) and on the automobile plus the mileage you put on your car makes it worth less at turn in date (lease) or when you trade it in for another vehicle plus tires and brake replacements.

Check out where you can manually estimate annual fuel costs by taking your total commute time per day, multiplying that by the cost of gas per mile, and multiplying that by your number of workdays per year.

In fuel alone, a 40-mile daily commute at 50 cents a mile will put you out $50,000 over 10 years if you work 2,500 days total. And with fuel costs continuing to rise, this figure will no doubt grow.

Alternatives are there in many area such as carpooling, biking, metrolink, and subways. Many government and private agencies give their employees perks for carpooling such as closer parking areas, free parking passes and contests. Some employers are letting their employees work from home also which has eased the congestion on the freeways.

Thinking about moving closer to your work? Call me to assist you in finding a new home. It might be a little more expensive but the drain on your car, gas and health

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

Hmmm...this is very interesting indeed.   Applies to all the driving done by realtors, too.

Well.  Somehow that DC/VA/MD are the worse just doesn't surprise me in the least.  Any commute here that includes inside the beltway, or on the beltway is going to be pretty bad.

Hi Li,

Yes we do spend a lot of time driving. I used to spend an entire day previewing listings but not anymore. I research on the computer and look at all the pictures. Gas is expensive and so is tires and brakes.

Hi Lenn,

The major metropolitan areas are the worst. It is the price you pay to live outside the city in the suburbs.

Hi Kristin, Glad San Diego didn't make the list. I am sure we would be in the maybe 20th place or so but it is not as bad as in some of the other metro areas.

Those are some crazy stats!

I am happy to see Denver is not among those high traffic states, even though we get stuck from time to time, but agree the better your time can be spent it should be and sitting in a car moving at 5mph is not a good use of time

Hi William,

I go to San Diego a lot and only at early in the morning or just after work is there much traffic congestion. I am sure SD is low on the list.

Hi David,

Yes I am glad your area is not amonst the top of the list. It is hard to work when you are stuck in traffic. I do find I get my best thinking time while I am driving to the office or I make phone calls on my bluetooth of course.

Hi Kristin, being able to live close to where you work and shop definitely adds quality of life.  Why waste time behind the wheel in traffic when you can enjoy your home and family instead during that time?

Hi Silvia,

You are absolutely right. I recently moved and since I now take the freeway I am 12 miles from work but 10 are freeway driving. Where I used to work was 4 miles but bumper to bumper city traffic during peak times in the day. Now except for a sig alert which pops up now and then, I get to work exactly the same time as before and I enjoy my new home. Moving where you want is important but traffic is a big consideration as we do not have the metrolink in our area.
