I have always been someone who believes you show people what you can do rather than tell them.  In fact, you will rarely find me talking about myself unless it is a situation like this where I was recognized for my giving to others.  At the bottom of each of my emails you will find the salutation, “It’s all about you,” for a reason.  I really do believe it is all about others.  This is why my company is called YourStories Realty.

Real Estate is a business known for its grandiose statements of fact. They call it puffery.  Telling people things that have a thin hold on the truth.  We are the Number One Agency is a typical refrain.  I am the Top Agent is what way too many promise. The point is you can say these things as long as the listener doesn’t ask you to qualify your statement. This is how a condemned building can be called a fixer upper, or handyman’s delight.

Honesty and forthrightness is what you should be asking of anyone you do business with and it is what I will always deliver.  Each of my transactions I give back to the communities in which I live.  I think that is important and that is why I do it.  Not for me, but because I have had the opportunity to see the needs in so many communities. If we as individuals don’t step up and give back, then who will?

Yesterday I was given an award for these efforts.  I am proud of the award not because I won it, but because I know of all the people this money helped throughout the year.  I will continue to do so each and every transaction because it is the right thing to do.  Being someone who lives and loves his community I know it is my duty and privilege to give back.  This plaque is a simple reminder that giving is caring and I truly do care about others. Caring about others is about showing the way.

A tad cryptic Andrew, I am sure you are not saying I am using puffery or huckstering.  And I do agree that being sincere in truly helping others is an important aspect of our professional lives.

 

John, I do think more should give back. There is an agent I know her team is making close to a quarter of a million dollars and only donates $5 a closing which is less than $100 in the year. I think this is shameful

Larry -  I see two profound things in what you have said.   Number one as Zig Ziglar says you will get what you want if you help people get what they want.  And number two it is always better to say "My clients tell me..." rather than "I"
