Don't Tear Down that Barn----Recycle It! Check This Out!

Farmers in this state should take note.

There’s money in that old barn that’s waiting to be salvaged.

Carl Richter is a salverger of old barns

His business, Rustic Innovations, is one of several that restore historic Minnesota farm buildings -- and deliver them anywhere.

Apparently,  those old buildings on your farmstead are valued and coveted by people in the south particularly who have lost buildings like this to termites and hurricanes.

Like me, he is a mechanical engineer, who would rather see these structures saved than go into the dumpster.  I have to applaud his efforts.

So many old farmsteads in Sherburne, Anoka and other counties are falling down, being burned or sent to a landfill.

He pays you….does his magic and makes a profit.  Sounds perfect to me.

Check this link out for more information - Minnesota Barns - Sabinske & Associates.  And, when you sell your property, you might want to contact him before sending that old barn to its grave.  Give it new life and you, some cash!

Don, there used to be a program on PBS called "The New Yankee Workshop". Norm Abram's used recycled barn wood in many of his projects.

I know that barn wood is very desireable.  I like the fact that this guy keeps the whole barn intact and actually restores it!  That is so commendable!

There are some homes with fantastic floors made of reclaimed wood from old barns.  It's good wood with a lot of life left in it.

I love the look of old barn wood and artists love to use them as frames.  I'm surprised anyone would destroy that wood!

We have a lot of old barns in our area and I'm happy to say we see a lot of  "re-purposing" going on!

People out here like the old barnwood, too. This is very informative. I'm glad someone in your area is helping out with the old barns.

Better to re-purpose something, then let it go into a land fill somewhere.  The old wood lasts and amazing long time, and has such character.  Good post about a local business.

Wonderful shout-out for one of your local businesses.  Repurposed/renovated barns are definitely desirable.

We have barns here in Sherburne County that can be saved and should be, too, in my opinion, Kat!

We have a small barn that is probably over 100 years old- the boards are actually petrified. We would love to restore it, ....it is on the to do list. I'm always for recycling.

It's always sad to see one go when it does locally.  We do have folks that re-purpose the wood though.

In the North East, remodeled, refurbished barms are very "chic"; they make great family rooms or dens.

Sounds like a good opportunity but pictures like what Andrew, #10, posted are incredible; I would hate to see something with so much history be taken away.

Who would want to get rid of that??

Hi Don... What a cool article. Even when they're falling down, there's still a lot of good timber. I've seen a few homes around these parts that have used old timber from old barns and buildings around here. Recycle whenever possible I say. Good read, thanks!

Interesting article, Don. Nice note about a local business as well.

It's got to take a lot of work and planning to get the building down and back up again. Good to see there's an interest & market in this kind of preservation.
Thanks for sharing,
Bruce

Hi Don,

I like to see these old treasures re-used too, always breaks my heart a bit when they flatten old buildings and bury them.

A friend of mine from high school has a company that recycles old barns into furniture, I will send him your blog post.

Thanks Bob !! I was raised in to use what we had, and don't waste !! I can't stand to see old buildings come down, and not get used again. Once this old wood is gone, it's gone forever. So I take them down and try to use every piece that's salvagable to build harvest tables, remodel homes, bars, all the Patina Stores in Minnesota, and more... So if you see a barn that looks like it's in need of a new use, feel free to send me photo's. JL
