The Condo Queen Becomes Sustainable -
This post is in response to the Contest "What Event in Your World/Life led You To Where You Are Today?" For me, that's easy. The housing market tanked! One day I'm spending overnight jaunts in parking lots in order to garner the best deal for my clients, selling condo conversions - to the next day noticing that a light switch had been shut off.
Phoenix was a hot bed of condo conversion sales and activity. It's reported that there were about 200 such projects going on all over town. That doesn't surprise me as I personally witnessed one agent pushing a hand cart with 55 contracts in tow!
So, knowing I had to switch gears from selling condos, I thought long and hard about my business. I attended the National Association of REALTORs® convention in November, 2007 by myself for ideas. One session stood out to me so I popped in to listen. Everything that agent said resonated with me. She was an an EcoBroker from California, talking about how she added value to her business, formed a networking group, and built a website with green building resources for her clients.
A discounted registration fee was being offered to earn the EcoBroker designation. I signed up and by April, 2008 had successfully completed the online courses, field trips, written essays after each chapter and passed the exams. It was refreshing to think I was adding value to my business. I selected a Trademark "Got Green?" and built the website, www.gotgreen.info. That took quite a long time and I continually tweak it.
But what has really turned my business around are all of the projects I've done with the US Green Building Council since March of 2009. I've greened the MLS in 2009 & 2013, adding over 50 features, integrating them into existing fields. Created a speaker panel session that I've participated in at least 8 times, including speaking at the EEBA Conference twice, which has brought me a lot of recognition and sales. Currently, I'm working on the 2nd in a series of education courses for appraisers. 21 such appraisers completed a 2 day course that I helped to coordinate in Phoenix in December, 2013.
And just recently I completed my NAR GREEN Designation to provide a well-rounded education on the topic.
It is also with great pride that my course is now being featured as part of the "Flight to Success" at the Arizona School of Real Estate and Business. I'm currently working on being accredited to teach the course on September 11, 2014.
I couldn't have done any of this if the housing market hadn't tanked and forced me to rethink the value I bring to my business. I'm incredibly proud of my efforts in Phoenix and it brings me more personal worth than anything I've ever done. I wish I could remember the name of that EcoBroker that spoke at the NAR 2007 convention. She deserves a huge pat on the back for her efforts in helping me and probably others to succeed!
