My "Dream Come True" Home

To begin with, I love my current home and I'm not complaining. I've lived here since Jan. 2006 and it's the comfort home that I feel my parents would be proud of me for owning.

It's a typical, 3 bedroom / 2 bath in a typical suburb where the Walk Score is ZERO, unless you count the nice walking path behind my house.

Since living here I've had a few things cross my mind that would make this home really a dream come true home.

  • The biggest ticket item would be updating the kitchen!  Yeah, I have tile and I live with it and don't complain.  The cabinets are, more than likely, 1979 (year built) originals that have been painted white with the added bobble knob (that would make Pamela Seley cringe!)

So the kitchen would be gutted.  Completely and totally.  I would have a sink that is not a "wash basin" for vegetable, as it is currently.  But I don't complain.  And the sink would be located correctly, not on a lopsided manner as it is now.  Why they didn't put in a FULL SINK that is directly placed underneath the kitchen window is beyond me.

There are little things that need updating -- electrical work, plumbing, I need a new furnance, some insulation in the crawlspace, the chimney needs a little work, and I'd love to get some solar tubes in the hallway and laundry room.

But did I mention . . . the outside?

  • The yards, both front and back, would be re-landscaped.  I want to rip out my back deck, put down a nice brick patio to include a nice fire pit or b-b-que, maybe even an Endless Pool!

The fencing would be re-worked to allow more visibility of the very lovely walking path behind my house.  And more space made for vegetable garden boxes which I would love to have.

So, I'd be staying put in my Dream Come True Home, just tweeking what I already have.  And I'm not complaining!

This is an entry to a contest about dream homes with Beazer Homes and ActiveRain/Trulia.

Yeah, I'm not complaining about my current digs either.  Although I really do have to get new flooring in my greatroom soon.  My fur kids have taken a toll on this carpet in 12 years and it won't be carpet going there next time either.   And I want to upgrade my shower.  But I think I have 10 or so more years in my current home.

Hello Carla: Your dream home gives you the shelter you need and I hear you, you are not complaining. All structures will deteriorate; some styles, passe; but your dream home will stand the test of time as long as you don't complain about it:) There are things to be done through the passage of days and years, but you will always sleep comfortably and dream in the place you call home.

Hi Carla.  Start now and do one thing at a time, one thing a year, and 5 years from now you will be living in your dream home.

that is so great that you are in your almost dream home. A kitchen remodel would be awesome. Oh, and thx for the mention and the link.  Nix to the bamboo - doesn't hold up well at all.   If you have plywood subfloor, I'd recommend a solid product - oak is just great and then pick the color/stain you like...or if you like reds, maybe Brazilian Cherry.  It would go so well with your hair, too.  - Debbie

I see we have the same barstools in our kitchen.  As for the dream home stuff, when you are down to tweaking what you have, you have found your dream.

Start with moving the sink.  Yes, that involves carpentry/cabinetry, and plumbing, but being able to see out the window while preparing food or washing dishes is such a plus!

Carla-Planning for future changes can be fun. I like working from lists so lining up changes and being able to cross them out as completed provides a sense of accomplishment. Do you do that too?
