Probably almost every adult and possibly many school children can recognize the Taj Majal from a picture of the front of the building. But, what about the rear? What does it look like there? Unless you have been there and walked around the building, most of us just don't know.
Similarly, I find the same problem when I am looking in the MLS for properties. If we have a buyer who specifically wants a large backyard, sometimes it takes looking through 100 or so properties to find even a few listings that show the backyard. I find this annoying since for many buyers, their dream of home ownership is that they have a backyard where they can hold parties or put up a fort with slides and swings for their children.
Sometimes all you get is one little corner of the backyard where there might be a few trees. Sometimes, if there is a pool, you get a bird's eye view of the pool. In these types of shots, you get no sense of proportion as to the size of the pool. Without the sense of proportion that a good picture commands, you waste a lot of time showing property that the buyers really wouldn't consider. It is also fairly disgusting when you go to a home, the rear looks like a junk yard. This should be addressed with the sellers before the home goes on the market. The backyard should be cleaned and cleared.
While yards have shrunk over the years, older homes still have nice big yards. It would be really helpful if many pictures were devoted to the yard showing the area from side to side and from the rear of the home to the back fence as well as what the rear of the house looks like. Agents come to a home - pictures are taken of the interior with the emphasis on the kitchen, living room and master bedroom. Please agents, start taking pictures of the back too. Nice pictures sell homes.
