Keep your house secure while on vacation!

Are you planning on taking a trip this summer? Be sure to spend a little bit of time before you leave to help make sure your home stays secure while you're away. A little bit of planning can go a long way and you'll have the added benefit of being able to relax and enjoy your vacation without worrying about your home. Below are some tips you might want to consider.

  • Let your alarm company know that you'll be away from home.
  • Tell your neighbors you’ll be out of town so that they can be aware of any unusual activity.

  • Discontinue your mail delivery.

  • Set up timers to turn on interior lights so that it appears that someone is home.

  • As tempting as it is, don't post on your social networks that you're going away--that makes you an easy target for burglars. You can go ahead and post on social networks about your vacation after you’ve returned.

  • Remove any hidden spare keys from around the house and give one to a trusted friend.

  • Take photos of your belongings, just in case. It's good to document your valuable, for worst case scenarios.

  • Lock everything, double-check and set the alarm.

  • Unplug TVs and other equipment in case there are power surges while you're away.

  • Adjust your thermostat--no sense in paying a high energy bill when you won't be home!

  • Arrange for someone to come mow the lawn, pick up the newspaper, etc.

  • Put irreplaceable valuables in a safety deposit box.

  • Consider disconnecting the garage door opener.

  • Lock everything! Check it twice and be sure to set the alarm.

It’s nice to go out of town on a well-deserved trip and it’s always nice to get back home…especially when you return to a home that is exactly the way you left it.
