Could It Have Been More Awkward at My Open House? Probably Not

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with NextHome Experience 17050

After 24 and a half years in real estate, I've had my share of moments that cover awkward scale from one to ten.

There was the time, leaving a listing presentation I thought I'd really nailed, when, upon thanking the homeowners one last time after crossing the threshold, I missed a step and fell to my hands and knees, folders and papers flying. (I'd give that a 6)

Or the time I went into a BIG meeting only to find there was a broker on the panel who remembered how I had chosen not to join his company after a merger (Dude, it was 10 years in the past, let it go!) and proceeded to let everyone on the panel know I had not "fallen into line".  Fake smile plastered on my face....awkward!! (I'd give that an 8)

But hands down THE most awkward moment of my career (to date at least) happened whenI was hosting a Brokers Open. The house was beautiful, brand new construction in a very desirable area. I had a nice catered lunch, broker turnout was fabulous. I had also recently lost some weight and was wearing slimming pants in a new size. Long story short, I was feeling pretty confident and high on life!

As I showed the last group of agents to the door, I thanked them for coming and turned to begin closing down and turning out lights. Suddenly, an agent comes running up to me from the front door and says "Colleen, did you know your pants are split open in back?".

Um....

Did I know?

I had black pants on... split stem to stern.

"Don't look...who saw? How did that happen? How long has it been like that? What can I wrap around my waist?" These are brand new pants!!!!!

You know those boomerang thoughts bouncing around while the heat creeps up your neck?

On the bright side? It was a brokers open not a public open house.

I figure most Brokers have had their own awkward moment, or three.

If not, I'm sure it's just a ravelling thread away.

Colleen- oh my goodness.   At least  it wasn't "in public" but with fellow agents.

Embarrassing but very funny especially the way you told the story. Glad you always kept the smile going.
