Why I tend to work in the sun when repairing siding.

No it's not that I'm working on my California tan, I would do that at the beach or poolside. Tearing off rotten wood siding in the heat is not the best choice for leisurely getting that golden tan. There is a much more important reason.

The damage to wood siding is often the result of the sun, wind and rain beating on the building. The weather can do a lot of damage over time but it is especially true on the sun side of the home. This is going to be true no matter where you are, but in Sacramento the south side of the building is likely to be the worst when it comes to bad siding.

Looking at homes that are neglected, we see it in the most severe stages. It can happen in well maintained homes too, the weather takes its toll. This is the side of the home that needs to be watched most.

So it's not that I particularly want to be working in the sun all day (these summer temps are rising), but that is where the damage is. Knowing this, you should take a look at your own home, paying greater attention to the side that gets the most sunshine during the year.

That siding has a nice California tan, so no need for you too.

And the sunlight makes things very clear.

Certainly sun is a huge factor but the material and maintenance are big also. If you have a product that always rots, time to change it.

It's the same here in Florida too Tom. The South side of homes are usually the most weathered. Here we have mostly stucco homes which usually have hailine or staircase stucco cracks that need to be repaired in order to keep water from entering the dwelling.

On a side note: The North side of homes here don't get much sun resulting in green algae on everyting from the stucco, sofitts, facia and gutters. Nothing a good pressure washing won't take care of if it's done every year as prevenitive maintainence.

I don't think we have the humidity that you have in Florida Paul, but I can see that this could be a problem for many in the country.
