Please Take Care of Your Stuff Before Someone Else Has To!

“Sadly most of it was packed away in boxes and in storage, he never really enjoyed most of it. I guess he enjoyed having it, but he never used it or appreciated the beauty or utility of many of the items.

This quote from the featured post by Enjoy Your Stuff inspired me to write a post.

Working with seniors, I know that so many older people have “stuff”.  Stuff they don’t  know what to do with.  Stuff they are saving for their kids.  Stuff they can’t bear to toss.

I understand.  It gets to be a burden.  Sometimes, I am called on to see what we can do after the fact….the fact that the elderly person has had to move to assisted living or a nursing home.  Sometimes when they have moved beyond this earthly realm.

My advice is to go through those boxes, closets and bags.  Find a few things that really can mean something to you, and take care to put them where you can see and enjoy them.

The other things, if you can’t find a home for them with a friend or relative??  Take a photo and pass it along to a charity, your church (if they hold sales) or sometimes a food shelf like the one nearby will take usable items that are clean and in good condition.

It doesn’t do anyone any good to hold onto things that they can no longer use or enjoy.  Give it away, sell it, or let a charity sell it.

But, please, don’t keep things that you are keeping out of guilt or because you think you have to.

Lighten your load.  Everything you own requires some expenditure of energy whether cleaning it, caring for it or moving it.

Change your life and lighten your load.  It will make you feel better in the end.  And, you won’t worry about where it’s going after, if you know today!

I see this all the time.  People coming in to the antique shop with mom and dad's "stuff" that they think is priceless.  Well, now, sadly, most of it isn't.  Some of it hasn't been well cared for.  They might think it's priceless seeing things on Antiques Roadshow.  But the prices they generally give are for a range....and the top range is pristine OLD stuff.  Not, things that have been used and well-worn.  If it has sentimental value that is priceless, keep it or, as you suggested, photograph it for a memory and then let it go to a new owner who will want it and, hopefully, either use it or display it!

About every year or two I go through my "stuff" and let some of it go.  There are some items though, not being used, that come with major guilt.  A china set and  antique sewing table come to mind.

Suzanne,

How true your post is.  The last theree moves, we gave away truckloads of stuff, the first 4, the second 3, and the last one 1...we are planning another move, and hopefully we won't have much to get rid off, as we have been dilligently cleaning closets, etc, every year.  A

Suzanne, I just started going through one of my closets last night and have made a decision to find the right place to share the extra stuff. I really don't need a thousand headband & hair ribbons. Well, not really a thousand, but there is a big basket and my nieces are going to love going through them and choosing their own.  Your reminder is so important for everyone at every stage in life. Stuff takes energy to care for and maintain.

The only things that have value are gold, silver, ivory, some artwork, certain antiques, rare stamps and rare coins.  Everything else is just sentimental to you and yours; it will mean nothing to strangers.  Get rid of it!

I agree with you. We love our 'staff' regardless our age. It is so difficult to let it go, all those memories and ifs..... But we should. If you don't need it any more, give it away, sell, donate, trash. I see so many places that are packed with staff.  People dream to downsize, but afraid of letting 'staff' go:(

Thanks for all the comments!   It is tough for family members to deal with figuring out what to do with "heirlooms" that their relatives have left behind.  It is easier for the person to take care of it while they still can...and then sit back and enjoy!

My Dad, who has passed, used to say all the time that "One man's treasure is another man's trash".  I have taken that to heart and so live as lightly as possible.  Just will not put my kids through what I had to go through and yes there was some guilt as I was grabbing things to throw away.  Silly I know however that is how it is.  Thanks for the blog.

You are welcome, Steve.  We can all follow, for instance, Alexandra's, lead and pare down more each year.  Every other year, I start on January 1st and get rid of one thing a day!  I am already up to December 17th of this year so I don't have much more to pare down!

Suzanne, I know have collected lots of Stuff over the years, and having a few garage sales is a good way to get rid of some of that Stuff. I know it's not good to be a Pack Rat.

Excellent post, Suzanne -- it's not just the elderly -- most of us can probably look within ourselves and lighten our load --- I believe it brings on more abundance(and I don't mean more stuff).

I do have too much stuff even though the boys take loads of it to St Vinnys every summer when the garages get cleaned.  Our most recent move did help though in that many things did not get to move into the house.

It sometimes helps to move!  But, keeping it down to start with is even better before the pressure is ON!

Suzanne, Since I have been cleaning out and packing up, I have decided I can live with a whole lot less and will be just fine. 10 trips to the donation center and about 6 to the dump means less will be moving with us.

Debbie, moving is a great opportunity to clear out.  How much easier it would be to keep at it every year?  One room a month or a closet, just keep moving around the house and see what you don't need!
