Pidgeons and Empty Houses

Somehow pidgeons seem to know when a home is empty. They start moving in and calling all their friends. Soon there are pidgeons on the roof and pidgeon droppings all over the front walkway and feathers all over the place. This is not only unsanitary, it is downright ugly.

Pidgeons can spread disease to humans. Their nests can cause fires around electrical areas, their droppings can poision waters systems and in areas where you get rain, their nests can plug rain gutters.

I have shown many a home where the pidgeon poop on the walkway to the front door was so thick that you had to walk through the yard to get to the front door.

There are pest services that specialize in this problem. They not only get rid of the birds that are there, they treat the roof and walkway and other areas so that the pidgeons won't come back again. I don't know how they do it, but killing the birds is NOT part of their modus operandi.

Many agents have told me that the best way to get rid of pidgeons is to pour some jalapeno hot pepper liquid around the areas where the pidgeons congregate. I have never tried this so I don't know if it works. Also, I have no desire to climb on a roof. I do know that when I have had the professional pidgeon people come over and treat the areas at my listings, the pidgeons have not returned.

While many agents worry about their listing on the inside. Few give thoughts to problems outside - like pidgeons. A word to the wise, please take care of the pidgeon problem at your empty houses because I am not taking my buyers there if I see a mound of pidgeon droppings any more!!

Plus, think of the buyers. If you want your listing to have nice curb appeal, get rid of the pidgeon mess.

Active Rainers, I hope you see this posting and offer some solutions. As it is a terrible problem in empty homes.

Myra, pigeon poop is definitely not one of those curb appeal enhancements!  I've never seen it get all that bad - most of our pigeons congregate around the Capitol building!

Thank you Patricia. It is a big problem here where there is an empty house. Some agents don't take care of their listings. They put it in the MLS and that is all they do. They should check on it every few days to see if the home is OK for showing.
