Transitioning from Client to Friend

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Infinity
Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a chick thing? I think I owe much of my success to the fact that I have a warm personality and really like to bond with my clients. It really just happens without concious effort. During the transaction, I gain their trust and their loyalty and I develop an awesome relationship. I'm a nurturer by nature (probably should have had more kids!) and make sure my clients needs are taken care of, all very professionally.  After close of escrow, I keep up with my past clients through calls, mailings, emails and the occasional lunch. This works for many clients. But how do you make the transition smooth for those clients that really want to continue the contact? At some point, we have to move on so I can take care of the needs of current clients. I surely don't want to offend by avoidance. Is there a smooth way to transition from the attentive agent to the past professional?

I try to keep in touch with mine also.  After all we spend weeks getting the deal done only to not talk to them again?

Lynette, I think each client is like a neighbor on your block. I am friends with my neighbors. I wave at them. They wave back and say "Hey, how about a bbq soon. I say you bet." Then I do the same thing next time. I just like to be that close to clients and neighbors. I call clients, email, mail, and call at least every six months. It works good for me. Thanks, Royal..

Don't get me wrong - I don't want to leave them sitting on the curb to drive away and never see them again. I LIKE following up with my clients because we have built a relationship. But when they say how blessed they have been  - "most of all I have been blessed to have a few special people come into my life that have just become so dear and special to me.  Now, without looking for it, but due to the fact that I had a profound need you were sent into my life and I am so happy that you were. That is very rare in our family and has only occurred 3 other times. Those wonderful people are still part of our family after many years."

I'm a mom, a real to the heart kind of person. But they have me put on this pedestal and we just went under contract! I have a LOT to live up to and am feeling the pressure!
