My Mother, from Denmark, South Carolina, met my Father in 1948 when he was visiting the area. Mom was only 17 and my Dad was 26 and her parents did not approve of the relationship, first because of the age difference, and second, he was “nothing but a damn Yankee.”
The lovebirds eloped and called her parents when they crossed the state line into North Carolina. As I understand it, they turned around and went back to Denmark where my Grandparents welcomed my Dad into their family with open arms, and he became the favorite son-in-law, even though he was a “damn Yankee.”
