The One Feature I Want in My New Home - Beazer Homes and ActiveRain Challenge

By
Real Estate Agent with Sabinske & Associates, Inc. (Albertville, St. Michael)

The Beazer Homes and ActiveRain Challenge stated that we should write about ONE feature that we feel all homes should come with and explain why!  Well, I have the one feature and that is that my next home will have a walk-through closet in the master bedroom, and this is something that I have asked builders for for years.

I want the bedroom to have the walk-through closet separating the master bath from the master bedroom.

This makes so much sense to me.  The greatest asset is that if the owners have different schedules, one can run the bath or shower, blow dry hair and do whatever else is necessary without waking the partner.

Plus, the added benefit is, if you have, as I do, a stand-alone valet, you can place that in the bath after having chosen your wardrobe and accessories for the day on your way into the bath.  Or, if you are really organized, you can do it in the period before retiring, knowing that everything you need will be ready to don when you are ready to put it on.

So, the comfort of having your clothes ready to select plus accessibility from the bathroom makes perfect sense to me. (I also would like a window with natural light or a skylight in the closet so that colors will show as their real colors! The new lighting doesn't make selection of varying hues all that easy!)

If you become ill and soil your bedclothes, you can change into clean clothes without disturbing anyone in the master bedroom as well!

I really believe in this concept, and I was able to convince one builder to try it out for me.  When we put the home on the market, it sold in FIVE DAYS!

And, when asked about why the buyers wanted the home, they stated that any home could have stainless steel appliances (or they could buy them), any home could have a center island or granite countertops.

But, the planning of a master bath ensuite with a walk through closet was something that they rarely saw in moderately priced homes.  If they saw them at all, they were in very upper end homes.

And, that sealed the deal for the builder and vindicated my position!

Please just give it some thought.  There will be so many people who will thank you for this one structural change that makes great sense!

Hi Suzanne - That makes a lot of sense, and I'd guess that it would be possible with most floorplans that have a master bath. It wouldn't help us much though with limiting the disruption of just one of us getting up - when one of us gets up, the dogs get up and there's no more sleeping for anyone - it's time to play!

Dick has a great point, but since I would never be able to sleep with a dog, I like this idea!  Especially when I worked nights.

Suzanne~ Interesting idea! I just want a BIGGER closet in the master. Or maybe I just need less clothes, shoes, etc.

Suzanne, when you explain it like that, it makes sense.  I hadn't thought ot it before, but it really is a good idea!

Suzanne, I see this in the more expensive homes, but not so much in the moderate price ranges.  I think it is a great idea!

That is a great feature to have in a home, and, like Fred, you normally only see it in high-end homes, so finding it makes buyers almost salivate!

I think that this will become more and more common in some floor plans that will be made available by builders!

Hi Suzanne -- I find that most newer homes have a master bedroom walk-in closet but the size definitely needs to be large enough with flexibility in organizing that space as well.

Suzanne Mclaughlin, great highlight of the importance of a walk through closet separating the master bed and master bath. Seems like something different.

Thank you, Will.  I really think that this is unique and would be much appreciated by couple sharing a master bedroom or anyone, really.  It has proven with one builder to be very successful!

Suzanne, I have a friend that built a home and she has a walk-through laundry room that enters her closet. She loved this feature and still does.

If I could have added a feature, that would have been it, Debbie.  I love that idea.  You can keep the ironing board right in there, too!

Suzanne, I have never seen a walk thru closet in our market! I think it makes plenty of sense.  So does having a stackable laundry in or near the master closet, now a walk thru closet!

Evelyn, thanks for your comment.  I like the stackable washer idea, too. But I would rather have it right near the closet or bath than near the bedroom!
