This is a great article from a copywriter named Marte Cliff. She is a former real estate agent, so she knows what's important both from a realtor perspective as well as a consumer perspective.

Google yourself!

What comes up on the search engines for you?  You should know this because most prospective clients will do this before they even call you.

Sometimes they won't call you based on what they read...or based on not finding much about you.

Google your competition as well.  What can you learn from that.  Maybe some of your competitors or colleagues are doing something right that you can search and reapply for your business.

What is a floating floor?

When does it make sense to install a floating floor?

I get this question often from customers because someone has told them they need a floating floor. But, most customers don't understand what a floating floor is. Do you?

What is the definition of a floating floor?

Technically, a floating floor means that it is "floating" on top of the floor underneath it, and it is not directly secured to the floor (i.e. no nails and no glue). Instead, the floating floor is held down or secured around the edges of the room - the base molding/shoe molding and transitions.  A floating floor is often used if it is going over an existing floor or on top of concrete. Because the floor is floated and not secured to the sub-floor, there tends to be a bit more movement in the floor - you especially see and hear this in laminate floors and it's more noticeable if the floor is uneven or if it was poorly installed.  There are many types of floating floors...read on

How long does it take polyurethane to dry on hardwood?
Dark hardwood

Well this of course depends on the type of polyurethane you are using - is it oil based or water based polyurethane?  And, this article on " How long does it take to refinish hardwood floors?" should come in handy for an overview of the whole process from start to finish.

For purposes of this post, this timeline is from the time the last coat of polyurethane is applied.  Please note that these times are estimates and times can vary, especially based on humidity levels.

Prefinished vs Unfinished hardwood - which is better?

Many of my Westchester customers ask me whether  prefinished hardwood or unfinished hardwood is better and which costs less. We install both types of hardwood, and the truth is, it depends on which of below factors is most important to you.

Definitions:

"Prefinished hardwood" means that the hardwood has been finished in the factory and then you just install it. "Unfinished" means you have raw hardwood that needs to be nailed into the floor and then sanded & refinished on-site.

What's the difference between linoleum and vinyl?

Are vinyl and linoleum the same thing? NO!

There seems to be a lot of confusion between vinyl and linoleum, and many customers mix up these terms - they say linoleum, but they mean vinyl.  So what is the difference between linoleum and vinyl?

Linoleum vs Vinyl - what are they made of?

While vinyl and linoleum often look similar, they are made from different materials.  Vinyl is petroleum based (a non-renewable resource), and it's a synthetic product..  Many customers in Westchester who are sensitive to the environment would prefer to use more sustainable items for their home.   Linoleum, on the other hand, is an eco-friendly product that is made with linseed oil and natural ingredients including cork dust, pine resin and wood flour .  The word comes from the latin "linum" is the word for linseed and "oleum" means oil.  It is extremely durable, often more durable than vinyl.  Linoleum has the color throughout the whole product whereas vinyl is topical and hence shows more wear over time.
