How exciting, the first batch of Naples Sea Turtles are expected to hatch around the 4th of July.
Nesting season for sea turtles started on May 1st and will continue through October.
Sea turtles nest every other year so this year’s turtles are ones that nested in 2012.
Lights are not allowed on the beach during turtle nesting season and can cause a problem, causing the turtles to go back into the water and not nest.
Hatchlings go towards the light towards the moonlight over the beach. If they see another light, such as electric or cell phone flash light app, it will cause them to go towards that light and not the Gulf.
Loggerhead sea turtles can weigh up to 400 lbs. The temperature of the nests affect the sex of the loggerhead turtles. Sea turtle eggs kept at 89 degrees become females and nests with eggs kept at 82 become males. If nests incubation temperatures are 86, it will result in an equal amount of male and female sea turtles!
