Former Capitol of Georgia... Milledgeville

I bet most of you could guess that Georgia's state song is Georgia on my mind, but the other bit of "trivia" that I am going to share with you today I bet none of you will actually have known this before you read it.  If any of you did, let me know.  I'll be surprised, but of course I'll take your word for it.

Milledgeville Georgia- County Seat of Baldwin County that borders beautiful Lake Sinclair was THE ONLY city ever built exclusively to be a state capital.  I'm sure many of you might have know that Atlanta Georgia was not always our capital.  Milledgeville Georgia served as the capital from 1808 to 1868.  You can tour the former Governor's mansion which also at one time served as the residence for the dean of Georgia State College and University.   You can also tour the Old Capital Museum which is now located on the campus of Georgia Military College.

Milledgeville's original city plan was 84, 4- acre squares and to this date was the only city in America planned, designed and built as a state capital.

Milledgeville is one of the prettiest towns in the South.  We drive through there sometimes, on our way to Augusta or to Charlotte.

The city was burned to the ground, and the surrounding countryside destroyed, during Lincoln and Sherman's "March to the Sea" in 1864.

Actually not much was burned in Eatonton or Milledgeville and we have lots of pre-civil war homes.  They "housed" soldiers in the homes and didn't burn the down.

Good eye William, because the former capitol building is in fact on Georgia Military College campus.  That building houses offices and a museum, but it makes for a beautiful campus.  It's where my Donald went to college.
