For the past few years we spent the 4th of July at Lake Tahoe but this year because of work we had to stay local and we ended up having a great day, just the three of us and didn’t even leave Albany!
The city of Albany, CA put on a great event at Memorial Park with several food trucks, music and many events for children to enjoy. You could purchase a bracelet for $5 and participate in all the rides you wanted. That’s pretty much the cheapest I’ve ever come across and well worth it! The little one rode a mechanical bull for a whopping 9 secondsJ , jumped her heart out in the bouncy house, climbed to the top of the rock climbing wall (with encouragement half way through from her daddy), rode a beautiful horse and zipped down the zip line! Her smile and excitement when she got off that zip line was priceless!
They had several “special events” including a reptile show that had all the children engrossed and a pet contest – cutest pet, best trick, etc…one little girl kept bringing her little brother up as her pet. My favorite was the “Diaper Derby”. They had heats of babies to toddlers “racing” and oh my goodness it was so cute! Usually only 1 – 2 babies made it to the finish line, but just watching their reaction to everything- how they would just sit there and look around, get distracted, start crawling to the side instead of to their mommy, etc was so freakin’ cute! Funny enough, usually the one that won was tempted by mommy’s cell phone. I’m a little obsessed with babies, so it was a good baby fix for meJ
We ate some delicious bbq from Boffo Cart (created by Rhasaan Fernandez who is also Chef at Sam’s Log Cabin in Albany, CA on San Pablo Ave) including chicken, ribs and a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and chips. For dessert we enjoyed the free ice cream provided by the Albany Chamber of Commerce.
The event was over at 4 and we headed home to have our own little cookout and to enjoy a mellow evening in. The little one and I made cheesecake stuffed strawberries and we chowed down on hot dogs, kielbasa, macaroni and potato salad, chips, etc (good old fashioned Fourth of July food).
We played Monopoly which I WON!! J I rarely win in the household so that was a bonus for meJ …and that was about it. The little one had seen fireworks the night before so we caught a few minutes on TV before she went to bed and that was enough for everyone. It was such a simple and easy day and we really enjoyed it.
I hope you all had a great holiday weekend whether big or small, most importantly, I hope you enjoyed it with your loved ones and took a moment to be grateful to those that can’t be here with us because they’ve dedicated their lives to serving our country.
