Suzanne wrote a great blog about a natural ant killer- I prefer to use all natural solutions because this is going to be used in my home if ever needed!  A lot of the over the counter solutions have dangerous chemicals in them and I prefer to use ones that should leave my house in a  fairly safe aftermath...

OOPS!  I HAD Ants in the House!  Not Anymore! Quick Organic Solutions!

When I came back from walking the dog this morning, I noticed a few “scouts” on my kitchen counter!

Now, admittedly, though I am a pretty fastidious housekeeper, I might have missed wiping a spot or two when preparing the ribs and salad last night.  But really?  How did you guys get here?

Well, never kill the scouts until you see more of them so you know where they are coming from.

Be patient.  I know that is hard to do when you see 5 or 6 on the counter!  But, wait.  You will see others coming from somewhere.

While you are waiting, prepare your defense(s).  First, I load a spray bottle with liquid detergent for cleaning dishes….about one tablespoon per 8 oz.  and then I add 1 tablespoon of vinegar and shake it.  You don't need to go to the store to buy ANTKILLER!  And, this is so much safer!

Now, when you see where they are coming from, spray them.  Then caulk or putty or glue the hole.  If you don’t you will have them back….guaranteed.

Then I spray the guys on the counter.  They die immediately, then I bleach the whole area.  And, follow that with another application of the soap and vinegar solution.

Both the soap and vinegar kill their “scent trails.”  I was done in less than fifteen minutes, and felt good enough to celebrate with a glass of wine…..It is Saturday, I have no appointments, and the house is now clean again.

Cheers!

Shanna, this is really great advise from Suzanne.  I'm not sure I would be patient with the scouts and not zap them right away.  Ants in the kitchen is better than ants in the pants, though!

i have two cats and in the summer months a small army of ants take delight in feasting on one of the cats dry kibbles...my cat studies the ants as they trek to his food tray...I then know it's time to replace the ant bait traps...in less than a few hours the ants are gone for another three months...I like Shanna's idea but ant traps are very effective and won't take up your entire Saturday afternoon...when you pick up your ant bait traps at The Home Depot, someone is sure to ask "do you have a pet?"  I have never seen an ant on my counters!  Shanna get the traps.

Thanks for the good tips, Shanna. I've been lucky so far this summer and no ants, but you never know. Have a great day.

Linda, it sure didn't take an entire Saturday afternoon.  From start to finish, and that is from mixing the solution to finding the source, sealing it, killing scouts and sanitizing the counter took about half an hour....and no harmful bait traps sitting around in my house!

Shanna, thanks for the reblog!  That was very nice of you!

Shanna, great timing for this re-blog, I have a few ants in front of my garage door, and they won't go away.   Will try this solution.

Good for you not spraying poison all over kitchen for a few ants!  I'll grab the Windex when I see a few... the ammonia works too.
