History of the Mediterranean Style Home

“Class”, “grace”, “elegance”…...just a few of the words I would use to describe the renowned Mediterranean Style Home (Also known as Spanish Colonial) – an architectural design that was first introduced to the United States in the earlier part of the 19th century. Adopting influences from the sunny countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, Italian and Greek styles are major contributors to its charming design.

The style was most commonly implemented into hotels, apartment buildings, commercial structures and residences and became more prevalent in the coastal areas of the Southwestern United States in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The Florida region also became a popular area for Mediterranean Style homes as the warmer weather deemed more conducive to its design. With structures that are typically based on a rectangular floor plan with larger arched shaped windows, the “villa” style was meant to soak in the warmth and breezes of the seaside. Although this style was primarily popular in sun-drenched states they are now found from coast to coast across the Country.

Typical Features Include:

  • Symmetrical Primary Facades
  • Arched Windows and Doorways
  • Stucco Walls
  • One to Two Stories
  • Red Tile Roofs
  • Columns
  • Wooden or Wrought Iron Balconies
  • Window Grilles
  • Lush European-Style Gardens

Modern Mediterranean kitchens commonly have wood flooring, tiled backdrops, pendant-style lighting, darker wooden cabinets and high ceilings. Exposed wooden beams are more traditional, however, it is common to find these features integrated in today's modern style.

In Nashville Mediterranean homes are more rampant in affluent areas such as Belle Meade, which is where the notorious Mediterranean mansion which stages as the plush home of the lead character in the ABC hit TV series “Nashville” is located. The home is currently on the market. It sits on over 6 acres and is well over 20,000 square feet, listed at just under $18,000,000.

Emily, I enjoyed reading your history of Mediterranean homes in the U.S.

I do love those orange or red clay tile roofs!  We don't see very many Mediterranean style homes in our area of the Midwest.  I am not familiar with the Nashville TV series-I will have to watch for it.
