Here’s a Queston for YOU! What Do You Think?

Here’s a Queston for YOU!  What Do You Think?

I am going to move to another state soon, and I expect I will probably live there for about 20 years.  I am going to rent my home out here in Minnesota for that time.

But, I will be returning to vote here, because I love Minnesota and am concerned about how this state runs the businesses and probably tax implications of my businesses here.

Do you think that this will be a problem for the State?  Do you think because I have a driver’s license in another state that I might not be able to vote here?

Just wondering how you think that will work out for me?

Do you have to have a driver’s license from your state to vote there or can you just own a home there that you are renting out?

Hi Suzanne -- I'm not sure what goes on in the Gopher State but this seems more like a question for the Secretary of State(or the MN legislative equivalent).   Real estate - I know --- voter fraud techniques -- not so much.

Sounds kind of problematic to me. Not an attorney, but I thought one can only have one Driver's License and it needs to reflect the state one actually resides. Owning property in a different state or states in which one does not reside does not mean one can vote in a state in which one is not a resident. But I could be wrong.

     Hi, Suzanne.

I would want a written answer from the Supervisor of Elections in both counties/states/locales.

You need to find out the residency rules.  But if you are not living there for a certain amount of time, it seems common sense to me that you would not be able to.  You might actually be committing fraud if you do.

Well, how about if I were a U.S. Senator and not just a college student or an immigrant?  Would that work better?  Or is just okay for me as a realtor to move to another state and just come back to vote even though I actually have an address, file taxes and  have a driver's license in another state?

Are there different rules for a basic right of voting for different classes of people?

I don't know the legal answer to that question.  But I would always vote where I was living.  Local elections mean something too.  That being said, in the last election I voted in they even "verified" my address to make sure I was voting where I was supposed to be with my driver's license.

Hi Suzanne -- let us know what you find out.  I am not too sure how that works from one state to another.

I caught where you were going with this right away..I think

To vote anywhere in the US you are supposed to be a citizen and vote in the area of your residence.   But those rules seem to be bent when you can register to vote without an ID or any kind of proof.

WE are one of the few countries in the world that doesn't require a person to have citizenship papers or proof on them at all times.  Allows all kind of voter fraud as we are seeing more and more of it.

Here is the reason for the question....it is obvious that the senator lives in Alexandria, Virginia, but he now has a driver's license in his "home state" so that he can vote there.

"The XX-year-old senator went to Congress in 1981 and became a fixture: a member of the elite Alfalfa Club and the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which made him a regular on the Sunday talk shows. His wife became a real estate broker in Alexandria, Va., the suburb where the couple live, boasting of her “extensive knowledge” of the area.

In an interview, the three-term senator acknowledged that he did not have a home of his own in [his home state]. The house….that he lists as his voting address belongs to two longtime supporters and donors.  …and he says he stays with them when he is in the area. He established his voting address there the day before his challenger in the August primary announced his candidacy last fall.

[The senator] moved his address from a rental property he owned….but had long since leased to tenants, and got a new driver’s license giving the golf course home as his address."

How is that different from a college student who goes to school in Michigan being denied the ability to vote there?

Just a question.  It seems that there are different "rules" depending on your social status and wealth.  Even the Tea Party thinks that this Senator might be out of touch with his home state since he is rarely there!

I clicked on the links.  That guy is definitely going to have some trouble.  Staying with folks in your home state doesn't constitute living there.  And, if he doesn't live there, how can he vote there?  And, if he isn't living there, how can he represent those folks?

Suzanne- I doubt that you will b able to continue to vote in Minnesota....  But if you are going to rent it out- I highly suggest doing VRBO- I am debating doing that with one of my rentals- I have friends that have increased their rental income drastically per property!

Thanks for the comments.  I just found it odd that voter registration is such a big deal unless you have funds and power.

You need someone's help beyond mine. I know my grandparents lived part time in two states, but had to declare one as the official home. They could only vote in one state.

So I see your comment...you aren't really moving?

You are right.  It doesn't seem fair that a senator who doesn't even have a residence in his state can vote there.
