Security breach? You need to provide a new method of payment or else!

Your card was denied and you need provide a new method of payment … or else!I got a call the other day from a major real estate website. It went something like this:

“Your card was denied and you need to provide a new method of payment. Or else we will be forced to terminate your account!”

I explained that my bank had suddenly issued me a new card due to a security breach and I was trying to change all of my online accounts ASAP.

The account representative was not sympathetic. “If you don’t pay by 4:00 P.M. today your account will be terminated.

Me: “I’ll save you the time. Go ahead and close the account now. I’ll pay any balance that is due but other than that, you’ll never get another penny from me.

Them: “You don’t have to say it like that!”

Me: “Actually, I do!”

Note: The amount in question? Just a little over five dollars!

Good grief, that is some lousy customer service!  I would have cancelled the service, too.

Hi Richard, I must have been lucky because this happened to me twice in the last 12 months and all my accounts were gracious about it. But we all know there are some really strange company policies out there and when you run accross one like this, you have to do what you have to do. Perhaps if the company in question loses enough business, they will go out of business.

Just wow.  I hate when people call me with attitude.  If they want my money, they should be nice about it.  I recently randomly got a new credit card in the mail ... same number, new expiration date and new CVV code because somewhere I'd used that card had been compromised and the issuer knew about it.  I had calls about it being declined, but no one was ugly.  I just had to update those two pieces of info.

Richard, Seriously, what did they expect with that kind of 'tude being given off?  Too many companies miss the point that their "drone" workers can be killing their business now matter how good their product might be.

Richard - Yep, had to deal with the new card thing myself twice this year already. It's surprising all the places your card is sitting that needs to be updated. Way to go for telling the phone creep to cancel. We all need to vote with our dollars.

I would have told them the say way, very loudly, with several more words added in. Then followed that with overnight delivery of written cancellation notice, along with a couple other things.

The shame is having to go through the process in the first place. But since we do creditors need to get a grip; earning one's business cost much more than $5 you lost or at least we know that.

Good for you, Richard. Things happen, and obviously you explained. Apparently they didn't need your account. Poor customer service is pervasive.
