Got my new roof, all must be okay, right?

Home Inspector with, covering the USA S0289

Sometimes it is confusing to me that a contractor calls himself a contractor then installs the roofing material so water goes under the roofing materials on the way to the outside edge. Oh, and want a payment for the roof... NOT

FHA 203k roof with 3 layers of roofingThey peeled back the bottom two layers at the first half course of shingles so it fit the gutter better, maybe. LOL

Then again maybe they did it to disguise the fact there were already two or three layers of roofing when they added this last layer.

Rolled roofing installed so water flows under the shingles

This is a good reason to have a draw inspector and not just pay for the work with a contractor invoice saying it is complete.

This roof might not leak for a couple of years but when it does no one will know it till it starts rotting out.

We need to be able to say it was installed in a "professional and workmanlike manner" and this dosn't qualify.

It is a bit hard to see but if you look along the right side you will see that roofing was installed then as a final laywer it was laid on top of the roofing with the seam on the high side ready to catch the water as it drains down the roof and the front edge was completed in the same manner. This is just not acceptable by any standard.

Two perfect examples of shoddy workmanship. Looks like no permits to me. My neighbor installed his own roof and it shows just like your examples.

Hi Mike - I agree with the no permit comment, as no inspector worth their salt would sign off on that one.  Might I add "do it yourself" to that list of suspects?  Thanks for the blog.

Mike, these are expensive mistakes.  I have seen roofers forget to run gas hot water heater exhaust pipes through the roof. It's best to have more eyes and more opinions.

I can't imagine the county inspector signing this off.
