This month Donna Foerster has challenged us to think about how we give back to our communities via her contest, "What Have You Done to Make a Difference in Your Community." In addition to staying informed about what is going on my community/city and voting, I regularly engage in various volunteer activities.
It occurred to me, that as each of us that blog about our communities, events and provide market reports are actively engaged in promoting our communities and social causes that are important to us.
Over the last year, I've managed to turn my passion for photography into a way of "helping" promote various organizations and recognizing deserving people. Every time I've provided photography services at no charge, I have helped an organization save money. I also try to enter my photographs in contests that are fund raisers for various organizations.
The picture below is of two Rocky Mountain Field Institute workers constructing a barrier to slow down water as part of flood mitigation efforts in the Waldo Canyon burn scar area.

I've taken photographs for the Rocky Mountain Field Institute, Colorado Springs Horticulture Society, the Colorado Springs Small Business Development Center, University of Colorado Colorado Springs College of Business. A couple of weeks ago, I went on an photography outing as part of a Big Brothers/Sisters event. That was a lot of fun.
These activities have culminated in my joining a Red Cross public affairs team. The Red Cross needs photographers, writers and bloggers to help share their story which in turn helps them serve communities better through training programs and in disasters.
If you would like to know how you can help any of these organizations, please feel free to contact me. If you enjoy photography and/or blogging, there are multiple nonprofit organizations that would appreciate your assistance.
