How I use blogging and my camera to help my community

This month Donna Foerster has challenged us to think about how we give back to our communities via her contest, "What Have You Done to Make a Difference in Your Community."   In addition to staying informed about what is going on my community/city and voting, I regularly engage in various volunteer activities.

It occurred to me, that as each of us that blog about our communities, events and provide market reports are actively engaged in promoting our communities and social causes that are important to us.

Over the last year, I've managed to turn my passion for photography into a way of "helping" promote various organizations and recognizing deserving people.    Every time I've provided photography services at no charge, I have helped an organization save money.  I also try to enter my photographs in contests that are fund raisers for various organizations.

The picture below is of two Rocky Mountain Field Institute workers constructing a barrier to slow down water as part of flood mitigation efforts in the Waldo Canyon burn scar area.

I've taken photographs for the Rocky Mountain Field Institute, Colorado Springs Horticulture Society, the Colorado Springs Small Business Development Center, University of Colorado Colorado Springs College of Business.    A couple of weeks ago, I went on an photography outing as part of a Big Brothers/Sisters event.  That was a lot of fun.

These activities have culminated in my joining a Red Cross public affairs team.    The Red Cross needs photographers, writers and bloggers to help share their story which in turn helps them serve communities better through training programs and in disasters.

If you would like to know how you can help any of these organizations, please feel free to contact me.    If you enjoy photography and/or blogging, there are multiple nonprofit organizations that would appreciate your assistance.

Sincerely,

Sondra Meyer, CPA

Sondra, you are spreading the word! By using something you are passionate about, you are volunteering in a manner that can be quite widespread. Good for you!
(I know about these contests, but, boyhowdy, just haven't had the time to even think TWICE about doing them AND keeping up with blogging and commenting).

How very true Sondra, we do support our communities, local businesses and organizations, non-profits by blogging and sharing and raising awareness. By helping to spread the word, taking pictures, recapping events you not only provide support but a great service, too.

That's really cool!  I think that capturing moments in our communities are awesome.  There's nothing like looking back at old photos from years ago.

Thank you all for your comments.   Just like us, nonprofits are realizing the importance of social media.

Gary, thank you for suggesting.

Amanda and Jared, it is nice to archive "events" from past.  Sometimes the photographs are used to help promote the upcoming year's event by showing how much fun everyone was having at the previous years.

Debbie, it has been great to find a way to put my passion to work helping others.

Gary, cute picture.

Winston, thanks!  I hope this post will encourage other bloggers to consider this avenue of volunteering.

Andrea - so true.   With the photography in particular, it helps the volunteers feel even more appreciated.   Stories are nice also.

Gayle, you make me laugh.  If you'll notice, I haven't been doing all that great of a job of keeping up with commenting and posting on my blog.  However, I know that the more I keep working at it, the better my time management skills will become.

Thanks Debbie!   That's a great idea to have the boards community Facebook page.  Facebook is certainly another area that various groups love help with.

Local splash, so important to capture, upload, help beat the chamber of commerce band drum... do you have a Flickr account Sondra? It shows what is it like around the property listings, the historic buildings... what the people do, are like with community videos make sense too! In the show and tell.

What a cool idea. It didn't occur to me that a photographer/blogger could be so useful, but it makes so much sense.

Sondra~ I almost started to raise my hand to volunteer, but I'm at my max. As much as I like to write and blog, I've got my hands full with our own charity organizations (and I'm falling behind).

Thank you for your entry and for sharing your story. It's wonderful when we can put our gifts and talents to good use for others!
