As a Westchester County interior decorator and designer, I see homes that run the gamut of taste.
And when this lovely client from Pleasantville called me, I could immediately discern that she had no taste. Oh, I don't mean that she had bad taste-she just didn't know what style she really liked or wanted and had no vision of how her living room should look.
The room was a hodgepodge-inherited furniture and lots of small antique pieces and tchotchkes - impractical and uncomfortable for both sitting and conversation. And even worse, you see the room as you immediately enter this charming turn of the century Victorian.
And so, with a lot of probing and discussion about the purpose of the room and the kinds of activities that would be taking place there - it was clear to me that this room was going to be a ladies' living room. Mother and daughter needed a space of their own - to get away from all the pro sports games that father and son watched. These girls wanted to read, talk and watch old movies together.
I measured, created a floor plan and got the approval to shop. While the client thought that she loved color, she repeatedly gravitated towards the soothing neutrals. Although she initially insisted that the furniture must be Victorian in keeping with the style of the house, I was able to convince her that comfort was more important here or no one would be using this room at all. No wood framed Victorian fainting couches for her!!! A velvet sectional and pillows trimmed with bullion and fringe, helped create that Victorian mood. A python custom upholstered ottoman provides the perfect surface for afternoon tea. Exposing the gorgeous stained glass windows and adding retro turn of the century style lamps and leopard, gave my client the consistency she craved-without hitting anyone over the head with it!
Mother and daughter are very happy and we all welcome you to appreciate the befores and afters:
