It's that time of year again when the surf meets the turf at the Del Mar Racetrack. Thursday, July 17, 2014, is opening day at the Del Mar Racetrack. More than 45,000 race fans are expected to attend what is known as the best beachside bash in the West. Hundreds of guests will participate in the one and only fabulous Hats Contest where amazingly creative hats are displayed on their owners. This is an annual tradition that marks the beginning of the Del Mar Horse Racing Season.
It's a great experience to attend the races, but traffic and parking can sometimes be difficult. There are several different options you may want to consider.
Hiring a limousine service to and from the racetrack is a fun alternative. San Diego Limo, Skye Limousine services Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla and most other areas of Southern California. They will also transfer you from the San Diego Airport to the racetrack.
Taking the train is a great way to enjoy the ride to and from the Del Mar Racetrack. Both Amtrak and the Coaster stop at the Solana Beach station. A free double decker red bus shuttle is availble to transfer you to the track. If you are from out-of-town you may even want to consider a Rail Getaway with Amtrak Vacations.

The Coaster Pony Express Train Combo Ticket provides transportation plus a discount admission ticket. Every day after opening day, you can purchase the ticket for just $11 which includes Stretch Run admission, round trip Coaster fare and a free shuttle between the Solana Beach Coaster Station and the track.
Of course, there is always parking at the track. With the exception of opening day, the charge for valet parking is $25 and might be a nice alternative to general admission parking. For racing fans who would like to shop or dine at adjacent communities, the "Shopper Shuttle" is a free and easy way to visit the neigboring communities of Del Mar and Solana Beach. The shuttles run between 5 and 10pm. This allows you to leave your car parked at the track and avoid driving in traffic and some difficult parking arrangements.
If you are bringing young children to the races, Camp Del Mar is an exciting day camp program for kids 5-12 years of age. Fun activities range from arts and crafts to minature golf. Trained counselors supervise the children at all times.
Del Mar Racetrack Friday night concerts are a special attraction. This season two Saturday night concerts are being offered, Weezer performs August 2, and Counting Crows on August 9. On Sunday August 31 Ziggy Marley will be the main attraction. As long as you purchase your admission ticket before the last race, the concerts are free. A Stretch Run admission ticket costs $6 and will get you a day at the races and a free concert.
If the Del Mar Horse Races are a favorite activity, this year will provide you with double the happiness. In addition to the summer season, starting July 17, 2014 and ending September 3, 2014. The Del Mar Race Track fall meet will have 15 racing days beginning November 7, and concluding November 30. The usual 2pm post time will remain for the summer session, but post time in the fall will be 12pm.
A visit to the Del Mar Racetrack is a memorable experience. Balmy ocean breezes, beautiful horses and an excited crowd give the track a unique ambience. Come and enjoy the 2014 Del Mar Horse Racing Season, and experience the magic.
