How Google Earth Assists Crooks to Enter Your Home

How Google Earth Assists Crooks to Enter Your Home

We live in such a great era where technology seems to get better and better but it is sad when crooks use this technology to further their desire of becoming rich by taking advantage of homeowners by using modern technology.

We are at risk of becoming victims of identity theft from hackers, and theft of wallets or even as simple as going through trash cans to find credit applications but now we find that a group of crooks called the "Ninja Robbers" who used Google Earth to gain information to assist them in robbing victims in their homes.

In a jail house interview, one of the robbers was asked what was their intentions and how did they gain their information. He said they used Google Earth to look for 'Easy Access' to obtain their goals in robbing rich homeowners. They would look at the aerial views and then focus in on doors, patio areas, garage entries and back walls.

This is really disturbing and shows how great internet tools are used for illegal purposes. I use Google Earth to assist me in looking at a neighborhood or to locate a particular home but it is scary to think that criminals are looking online to find weaknesses in our homes. Plus anytime a home is put on the market, their interior and exterior pictures are all over the internet f-o-r-e-v-e-r.

This particular gang of thieves was targeting the ultra-rich but do not discount the fact that smaller gangs are using this same internet option to gain information for their illegal purposes.

Make sure your homes are secure. A home burglary would be extremely upsetting but a home invasion would be more invasive and sometimes deadly. Make sure your internet pictures do not show expensive items that would lure a crook to drop in on a shopping spree.  Make your home more secure to make crooks look elsewhere.

Kristin while this may be true think about all the real estate agents who promote the usefulness of real estate open houses! It is a free invite for anyone with a pulse to walk through the door. They are the perfect opportunity for thieves to enter and either do their dirty work right there on the spot or come back later when nobody is around.

As Realtors we constantly preech how only qualified buyers should be looking at our listings yet the waste of a Sunday is still consistentely promoted by lots of real estate agents eventhough they are completely unnecessary.

All good comments - but the common thread is, if they want to get in, they will find a way.  Security, cameras, and the good old fashioned dog can help deter the more industrious...

One thing that amazes me so much when I look at houses is how little people do to cover windows and entry ways. I see so many homes with blinds open or no window dressings at all and anyone driving by can see right in!

But it so true to make sure not to have valuables in sight when photographing the inside of your home for whatever reason. Once those photos reach the web, they will always be there!

Alexa- Yes it is scary.

Ann- Posting on FB while on vacation is bad news.

Roy- What....not to reblog?

Mike- Yes, they are out there in the bushes just waiting for the right time.

Pete- The internet is a hotbed of information for good and bad people.

David & Kirsten- Vacation pictures should be shared after returning. Checking in on FB tells people you are gone right now.

Marc- We have to deal with so many sources of information leaked to the criminals.

Suzanne- It can be tough when it is vacant. Our MLS doesn't allow us to say vacant.

Kathy- It is a good idea to make it as difficult as possible.

David- Yes we must stay on top of the news.

Debbie- Lucky girl as that is the way to stay safe.

Kat- I know and Google Earth is such a creative tool for legal uses but not illegal purposes.

Than- In many high end homes, the person must be qualified before they are allowed in but I agree that very expensive items should be put in storage.

Pamela- Having watchful neighbors is truly a benefit in your neighborhood.

Barb- Cameras are a good piece of evidence and also your doors can be linked to your phone so it alerts you if the door goes up.

Adrian- Yes the better the technology, the easier it is.

Hi Jill- The criminals are always looking and waiting for weaknesses.

Hi Joan- Yes I agree that it is very disturbing.

Hi Sharon- I like that phrase "Technology is a double edged sword".

Hi Kathy- There is a paragraph in our CA State Listing Contract so it should be discussed at the listing to all clients to remove valuables and meds.

Hi Silvia- That is very good news but would make it harder to sell their properties.

Hi Richie- Such good advice as things like this are discussed in the news at Christmas but it is reality anytime of the day, night and all year. Unemployment rates are up!

Hi Bill- Good advice to get an alarm/ dog and good neighbors are priceless.

Hi Lottie- Good Neighbors are the eyes and ears we all need even snoopy ones.

Hi Bill- Luckily in all the open houses I have done, never has any owner told me that anything was missing. Once a seller called to say during the day their house was showed 5 times and a 5lb box of cheese was now missing??? I was sorry and made a comment in the MLS.

Hi Jeff- So true and if they would use their creative ideas for good it would make the world a better place.

Hi Carol- So true...alarms and barking dogs are good deturants but many Realtors do not want to show homes with alarms. I personally hate them.

Hi Josh- My last home had a front door with a large beveled glass insert and my back yard had a French Door so I was always worried about burglars looking in but luckily nothing ever happened.

Hi Debbie- Thanks for the kind words and yes we must be aware and practice good security measures.

Thanks for the tips .Criminals will always use what is simple and easy to serve their twisted purposes. Big dogs help deter that as well as a good security system that alerts your phone and doesn't depend on house electricity. You can camera your entire house for under $600.00 now.     ..

Lock you doors, close your windows/blinds and set your alarms. That's all we can do to protect ourselves from robbers :-/ They'll always try to find a way in.

Hi Mark- A big dog is a good deturant as many crooks are fearful of them and they make a lot of noise. Very few go to the trouble of putting tranquilers in meat to shut up the dog. Wow $600 is very inexpensive without the risk of being turned off.

Hi Suzanne- You know, locking the door is a big thing as many find their way in through an unlocked slider or back door from garage. Not exposing your possessions to the public through open windows and french doors is a good idea and high gates to backyard as well.

Hi Michael,

I personally think they put way too much information on TV. Tell too much secretive stuff that can jeapordize our national security and this is a good example of what the crooks here on the news networks. I couldn't believe it when they gave a jail house interview and he gave all the details.

It never fails to amazing how incredibly smart some criminals are.  If only they could put those minds to use in a positive manner.  Thank you for this article, it made me think about an issue that I had not before.

I am so glad you stopped by and read my post and glad it was helpful. I agree with you totally that if only they would use their brains for something for the good of the world instead of trying to take away someone else's property.
