One of the Economic Facts of Life....Learn This and You Will Be Better Off!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sabinske & Associates, Inc. (Albertville, St. Michael)

Have you heard?  There is a new movement afoot among the recently re-employed.

They have discovered a rule that will serve them well in the future.  It is one I learned long ago, too.

And, while, I am not rich, I am able to live without fear.

IF YOU HAVE TO BUY IT ON CREDIT, DON’T BUY IT!

There is no guarantee that your job or career will be there next week, next month or next year…even for the self-employed.

You could be in an accident, become incapacitated through illness, your company might move or be acquired and you are left without the means to sustain living, let alone within your means.

And, now, you have a mortgage, food, insurance, likely a vehicle loan, and credit card debt for something that is worth half what it was when you bought it.

College age students are hardest hit by the credit card debt load.  And, then add student loan debt to that, and you can see that there won’t be a home purchase in the future for many of them for years and years.

Everyone needs to learn the economic facts of life.  I hope that not all learn them the hard way with debt collectors calling their cell phones every two hours.

AGAIN, IF YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT WITH A CREDIT CARD, AND IT IS NOT A NECCESSITY, DON’T BUY IT!

Here's hoping that as in my last post, people who need to move on in life will take advantage of the assistance and advice from others who have learned lessons either with or without hard experience!

Suzanne I think  a lot of people learned this lesson when the economy took a dump and so many were upside down on the homes. Why? 2nd's and 3r'ds taken out to buy trips, cars, whatever. The country was brought to it's knees because of so much WANT! Enough already!  Interestingly in the process of our kitchen remodel we mentioned to a designer that we paid cash for stuff.  She had some big sale going on and we said - no we're purchasing next week and paying for it all in cash.  Well just put it on credit to take advantage of the sale, she says.  Why?  So she could get a commission?  It was all about her and what she wanted.  She didn't listen to us.  We bought elsewhere as planned the next week and paid cash for the entire project.

Anna....YAY!  I am so glad you didn't fall for that and stood your ground!  That is important.  And, you are right about the 2nds and 3rds.  I have seen it all in short sales and foreclosures!

That's how we operate...we have the cards but rarely use them.  Nice job, Suzanne!

Nicely put.  I don't even have a credit card now...I use cash and a debit card when I must!

Suzanne, We don't really use credit cards anymore, we have store accounts but have only purchased items on it that we had money in the bank to pay it off.  Lesson learned the hard way.

Suzanne,

You make an excellent point here, and we agree with you.  One has to use credit wisely.  I recently read a post by Joe Petrovsky (AR member and lender), saying that credit and repayment of it is still important to qualify for a loan.  A

I learned as a project manager at Accenture and having a corporate card, that with the American Express card I had every month it needed to be paid in full.  That transferred over to my other cards, and then I could open the bills and know that the credit extended was already paid!  Worked great.  Ease of payment, and no worries!

I use my credit card for everything, but it is paid off every month.

If you look at the interest thaat you  pay you can buy some really nice things if you plan and save.

We use our cards to earn reward points and as a convenience. Thank goodness we can pay them off every month.

Sometimes a purchase like a flat screen TV can get people into trouble.  Think of the interest rate on that card and factor in how many months at that interest rate it will take you to pay for it.....that will usually stop you in your tracks!

Great advice.  Sometimes delayed self-gratification is the best method, especially when it comes to using credit cards for non-emergency things.

Suzanne, generations before us have survived without credit cards although sometimes their shopkeepers kept accounts for them but I imagine for the most part it was for necessities and not all the niceties and extras we are all too easily tempted to charge.

Thanks, Grant.  I read an article in the local business section just yesterday saying that most people are working at paying off the credit cards and not adding new charges.  SCORE!

Suzanne, Good advice for all. Now we charge on Credit cards to get points which are used for travel but we pay off the credit cards monthly. Credit card debt accumulating is a financial disaster without question as some folks will never be able to pay it off. Life is loaded with uncertainties.
