After a long, busy day at the office, I arrived home to my boyfriend and his daughter in a very hungry mood around 6 PM. I hadn’t planned anything for dinner, and there wasn’t anything magically awaiting me on the table so we decided to head out and try a newer place on San Pablo Avenue called 938 Crawfish. I’ve been to Rockin’ Crawfish in Oakland so I pretty much knew what to expect but he had never tried anything like it and his 8 year old daughter was already protesting even though she had no idea what was there.
YUMMMMYYY! We go there right before the 4-6:30 happy hour ended so we quickly ordered a half dozen oysters for $1 each and an order of calamari for $5.50. The oysters were from Washington and tasted fresh and delicious and the calamari was awesome! It had a very crunchy, tempura like batter and was served with tartar sauce and cocktail sauce.
We were still getting the grumpy face from the little one even though she enjoyed the calamari, even after we told her what it actually was…I remember those years as a child where you start having your own opinions and when you decide you’re upset about something you have to stick with it, even if you’re not upset anymore, or even forget what you’re upset aboutJ. It’s amusing at times and when it’s not, it helps to remember what it was like being that age. Then we decided what to order for the rest of the meal and finally brought a smile to her face when she heard what the dessert was -”fried oreos”! She tried to play it cool, but she mentioned the oreos about 5 times before the end of the meal so we knew we had her hooked.

We decided to basically try everything and ordered “The Meal”- check this out…garlic noodles -half pound each of crawfish, shrimp, mussels and clams with sausage, potatoes and corn in a sinfully delicious garlic butter sauce (you can also have lemon pepper or combo), fried catfish and fries AND fried oreos with ice cream for dessert. “The meal” was a little under $45 and when it was all said and done we were full and satisfied and yes, there were leftovers. Next time I’d ask for something other than the mussels, but that’s just personal preference. The catfish was so moist and perfectly fried! We were actually surprised at the quality, just not knowing what to expect from a crawfish joint on San Pablo, but we are definitely looking forward to our next visit!
