Buying a home or Selling a home can be very stressful, each on their own, combine the two and it definitely can get a bit tense.
I was meeting with one of my clients who was doing just that, selling a current home and purchasing a new one. I usually meet in person so that I can truly focus on that one individual, read their body language and determine their emotional levels.
When I walked in to talk with my client about the details of the home inspections on both the purchase and sale (yep, everything was happening at once), I could quickly see she was anxious and worried.
I asked how she was doing and she confirmed with her words just what a wreck she was. So, I asked for a cup of tea and made my way to the kitchen table where I spread out two piles.
When she sat down I explained that we would take it one step at a time, focusing on one transaction at a time. About 5 minutes into the discussion, she looked up at me and said, "I feel so much better. You really have a calming effect on me."
I smiled and thanked her and said a silent thank you prayer that she was able to relax. It's Not the First Time I've Heard This. I've heard this from family, friends and other clients.
A lot of people around me have said some kind of variation to this throughout my life. So, when I got into the real estate business, I vowed I'd be the calm in my client's storm.
I've had people cry on my shoulder, call to just discuss, scream (not at me - just the venting kind), some people worry themselves frantic and some people just need questions answered and reassurance.
So many people think it's easy to be a real estate agent. That you just stick a sign in a yard or take an order and deliver a set of keys. There's a whole big journey in there too and I'm happy to see each of them through their own journey of home ownership! These are the kind of moments that are my biggest reward.
...yes, we got the house sold and she's moved into her new place and is very happy.
