Manditory Water Restrictions in California

In January 2014, California Governor Jerry Brown declared the state in a drought impossed an voluntary request for all public and residents to cut their water usuage by 20%. A recent survey found this reduction was only 5% so yesterday the state imposed 'Mandatory Water Restrictions' for the entire state.

Mandatory Water Restrictions in CA.

  •  Washing hard surfaces like driveways, parking lots and building exteriors is prohibited at all times.

• Golf courses, parks and schools can water only between sunset and sunrise.

• Lawn watering and landscape irrigation prohibited between 10 am-5 pm.

• Running water for car washes is prohibited. Rinsing w/ Buckets/Nozzles.

• Restaurants can only provide water upon request.

• Commercial nurseries can only water between midnight and 6 a.m.

  • Water Fountains must recycle the water or be turned off.

There will be fine of $500 per day for anyone violating these restrictions. All owners and residents are urged to go along with the cutbacks. The cities have been ordered to write citations and enforce these restrictions.

In the future, restrictions could include only watering every other day, restricted flushing and limited water for baths or showers. Residents are told to think of alternative landscaping and sprinkler systems.

Kristin, what a shame that people have to be forced to think of conservation - I try to keep it in mind regularly.  Hopefully we'll see some rain sooner than later.

Hi John,

I do too and we have rocks with just some bubblers to the trees in the backyard and in the entire front we put the underground drip system so never does any of the water run down the street. Plus we only have to run each station for 1/2- 1 minute each and there are only 4 stations for front and back so it is a pretty neat system.

Hi Jane,

I have been expecting it and went ahead and put a lot of rock in instead of grass and plants in the backyard. So now I am cutting back inside as well. I just wish we could get some rain and green up the fields some.

Your post reminds me of a commercial they ran during another drought.  Guy running from faucet to faucet in the house only to find no water.  Kinda scary.  Has always stuck with me

Kristin, some of these restrictions would definitely cut into the creature comfort zone like limitations on showers although there is plenty of good new technology to make flushing less of a waste of water.

Hi Mark,

Yes and they are saying Northern California is literally running out of water. The earlier plan was to take water from Southern California. We have low later tables but enough for our area but I guess the state feels everyone must share. Our temperatures are hotter down here so we have more evaporation and sprinklers must run longer to keep landscaping alive.

Wow!  I don't believe we've ever had water restrictions.  Hope it gets better.

Hi Judi,

We had never had any before in the south. I recall a few years ago Northern California had water restrictions in the early 90's but it never trickled down the state.

Hi Silvia,

I have a sunken bathtub and like to fill it 3/4 full so I might have to start taking quick showers.

I think this is so important to have in place, and am surprised it took so long given the drought we are in and have been in for some time. Government moves slowly sometimes.

Hi Jeff,

I think in January it should have been ordered but he waited until summer. Maybe a lot of people and developers would have used optional landscaping designs that use less water. Our sprinklers are not allowed to spray and must be underground. We have several bubblers that pop up like 4 inches to whirlybird around the top of the tree trucks but do not spray out. It was a new ordinance in our city. The problem with underground is that you cannot know where the lines are if you want to add more plants. We are having a gardener come and remove all the sod and make sure their are plenty of lines to the edges to water all the grass. They only run for 1 minute each and no water goes down the street. It is a fantastic system. We all must do what we can to conserve on water.
