Boston Properties: Construction Updates at the Burnham Building

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Boston

Construction in Downtown Crossing is progressing rapidly, especially at the site of the former Filene’s Department Store, the 1912 Beaux Arts masterpiece designed by the famed architect Daniel Burnham.

The Burnham Building is currently being renovated and redesigned for inclusion with the luxury Millennium Tower development, which we reported on back in May.  It was recently announced that the regional grocer Roche Bros. began construction in the historic retail building, with hopes of becoming the first supermarket in the downtown area.

Roche Bros., a family-owned business that operates 18 stores, was founded in 1952 in Roslindale and has close ties to the Greater Boston area with locations in West Roxbury, as well as the North and South Shore and Cape Cod.

Plans call for a full size gourmet supermarket now being built in the lower level of the building, occupying the space of the former discounter Filene’s Basement.  Roche Bros. will also have a street level presence, with a specialty shop and café on the first floor.

Additionally, the European retailer Primark has agreements to open in the first four floors of the building.  This well-known overseas fashion chain specializes in boutique clothing, housewares and cosmetics.  Boston would mark the brand’s first expansion into the U.S. market, making it the American flagship and restoring the Burnham Building to its department store glory.

The remaining upper floors are being reserved for office space, with Boston advertising firms Arnold Worldwide and Havas Media scheduled to move in by September of this year.  Both agencies, which are owned by the same corporate parent, announced late last year of their plans to relocate.

Residential sales for Millennium Tower are scheduled to start in October, with pre-registration taking place now on their website.  For more information on these or other properties, please contact agent Chris Remmes at 617-398-0018 or www.RemmesRE.com.
