This is a photo taken in 2003 while we were visiting my in-laws in Florida. Mercedes is a Leonberger and was a medical service dog for my husband. She would nudge Joe’s left knee, a signal that an epileptic seizure was about to happen, then he would take medication to prevent the attack.
Mercedes had already been trained as a search-and-rescue and therapy dog, before discovering her detection talent. She then underwent additional training to become a “certified” medical service dog.
On a few occasions when traveling by air, a flight attendant would ask if a small child could pet Mercedes, in order to calm the child, and more often than not, she was successful.
While looking for photos for "Throwback Thursday," I came across this one, and thought it would be nice to pay tribute to Biene von Loh a/k/a Mercedes, she gave me so much peace of mind.
