LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GOLDEN, COLORADO
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GOLDEN, COLORADO has an elevation of 7,374 feet, (2,248 miles), and is just one of the larger of the foothills overlooking Golden, Colorado. Its earliest known inhabitants were the Ute Indians, who used the mountain as a lookout point. It is known for its grand natural views and scenery. Downtown Denver can be seen 12 miles to the east.
The Boettcher Mansion, built in 1917 by Charles Boettcher as a summer home and hunting lodge sets inside the Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve, only a half-hour drive from Denver. The mansion was donated to Jefferson County along with some 110 acres of land in 1970 for public use and enjoyment. It is self-sustaining, supported primarily from event fees.
It is also known as the gravesite of William “Buffalo Bill” Cody who made his first trip to Colorado as part of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush in 1859. He met with little success searching for gold and left only to return years later to perform in opera houses in Central City and Georgetown. In 1917, Buffalo Bill died in his sister’s home in Denver and it was his choice to be buried on Lookout Mountain.
On the very steep side of Lookout Mountain, built in 1913, is the Lariat Loop road. It is a favorite of mountain bikers and hikers who can also follow the Chimney Gulch trail, a difficult narrow “single track” hiking trail. The mountain is also a favorite of paragliders.
Homes on Lookout Mountain, Golden, Colorado range from the mid $200,000’s and go upwards of $1,700,000. There are some beautiful lots available also starting as low as $110,000.
