What NOT to Flush!

The Public Works Department would like to remind residents that many materials flushed or poured down a drain can harm the pipes that are connected to the sewer system and cause sewer backups in your home.  Many of us are having lots of people using our toilets this weekend, so please be careful.  I guess having a sign up of what not flush would be tacky . . . but here is the list!

Toilet

Basically, the only thing you should ever flush down the toilet is human waste and toilet paper. Keep the following out of the toilet: disposable diapers, tampons and tampon applicators, sanitary napkins, cotton balls and swabs, dental floss, condoms, cleaning wipes of any kind, facial tissue, bandages and bandage wrappings, automotive fluids, paints, solvents, poisons and hazardous waste.

Do not flush medications down the toilet. Take them to an approved prescription drug take-back site or event.

Never pour grease down your sink drain! Grease in sewer pipes cause maintenance problems for property owners and the Township.  And thanks to Joan Cox - never put down Kitty Litter either!

There you have it.  Enjoy your potty safely.  :)

I find it amazing how many things say "flushable" on them, when they should never be flushed.

You are rigth Daniel. . . we had a clog at our house caused by our grandson flushing underware. . . that is what prompted this post!

You are so right Tammy, especially when SEPTICS are in the mix!

The biggest issues will always be with new owners and their first experiences with a septic system coming from public systems. Education is important

When we were teenagers, we broke up glass whiskey bottles and flushed them down the toilet, so that Dad wouldn't find them.  Probably not a good idea, huh?

Joy, great reminder what NOT to put down the toilet!   I have always had the cat box  and flushed the waste, but a plumber said the kitty litter was not good either.

One home maintenance topic that tends to get overlooked but is all too important for the homeowners who want to keep the plumbers away.

Great post Joy, and grandkids aren't the only ones who put things in the toilet that shouldn't go there.  I'm sending a copy of this to my husband (dental floss, bandages, cotton balls) and to our daughter who dumped a bottle of narcotics down the john after an outpatient surgical procedure.  Our little Miss Mother Earth doesn't know "everything" she thought she knew - ha!  Oh, and Joe puts grease down the garbage disposal, he keeps the local plumber in business.

Hi Joy,

This post reminded me of a popular toilet commercial where they show golf balls, cat litter, and all types of substances being flushed down the toilet to prove what a great toilet it is.  How misleading...thank you for sharing.  Best of GREAT success to you always!

Joy, this is important information for all of us as it only takes one time to create a mess!  Napkins are also a no no and should never be used as a replacement for TP when we run out of toilet tissue.  Like facial tissue it is designed to bunch up and swell with water where toilet tissue is designed to break apart with water and disintegrate.
