Our EA, Nicole, and her husband, Patrick, recently decided to foster a cat through Long Way Home Adoptables & Friends, a pet rescue organization located in College Station, TX. Read her story and find out a simple way you can help Long Way Home TODAY at the end.
Working at Bryan Broadcasting, home of Candy 95 and WTAW 1620, gives Patrick the opportunity to hear about many local organizations. We attend several benefits and balls each year and realize the importance of charity in our community and beyond. Many of Patrick's coworkers own rescue animals, and we've heard about Long Way Home for a good while now. They go on air every so often to talk about their available animals and we know what a great opportunity they provide to animals who may not be able to make it in the very full local shelters!
When we were approached about taking in a foster cat, my first thought was "Oh no! We're going to end up like (our friend) Suzanne with six cats!". While we have two cats of our own, we have been adamant that our next household introduction would be a baby! Patrick assured me that this would be a temporary arrangement and that Long Way Home would even be providing the food so that we would essentially just be housing a sweet little kitten temporarily. So off we went on a Sunday afternoon to pick up "Tucker" from April, the VP and volunteer coordinator for LWH. We're met with the most precious little cat with piercing blue eyes. April let us know that Tucker was a sweet boy, but was in the awkward "teenager" phase which makes him harder to adopt. We learned some more about his mannerisms and preferences and went home to begin our adventure.
When we got home with Tucker, we decided to rename him "Walker" to fit the Game of Thrones theme names that all his brothers received. If you're unfamiliar with that show, the characters the White Walkers all have the distinctive blue eyes which Walker also has. Introducing Walker to our other cats, Cinna and Indie, proved to be just about as difficult as we thought! Anyone who has cats knows what a conniption fit existing household cats throw when a new companion is thrown in the mix! Our male cat, Indie, caved pretty quickly and was having fun with Walker in no time. Cinna took a little more convincing, but in just two days, she was playing with and grooming him like they were old friends.
Walker has enjoyed us humans just as much as the other cats. He loves to cuddle up in bed with us, but in this summer heat, that's an option for only so long. We know that whatever household he is in in the cooler months will enjoy that benefit immensely. One of my favorite traits of his is his sheer enthusiasm to be pet and loved by us. He'll stand on the end of the bed or couch with his front paws on our chests and rub his head all over us, while purring loudly to express his content.
After a week with us, Walker may be adopted out soon. While I will miss him, I am excited for him to find his permanent home sooner rather than later! His future owners will be incredibly lucky to experience his curiosity firsthand. He will surely add much excitement and love to their family!
Long Way Home Adoptables & Friends relies on community support in the form of monetary donations as well as volunteerism. There is a wonderful opportunity to support this organization TONIGHT at Boneheads College Station (located at 820 University Dr East, Suite 100). Through their generous profit sharing program, they will split any profits made between 5 and 9 pm on Tuesday, July 22nd! All you have to do is tell your server that you are there to benefit Long Way Home and you will be responsible for helping to save another animal life! If you're so inclined, you can even bring your dog with you and eat on the patio! Of course, Long Way Home always accepts donations in the form of money, food, cat litter, dog and cat toys, and your precious time or home. Check them out to see how YOU can help!
