Donna Foerster challenged us this month to write about how we're making a difference in our community. That's an interesting question, because as virtually all of us are involved in real estate, every time we sell a home or help a buyer, we're changing the face of where we live and work. I don't think we should minimize the impact we make as REALTORS®.
Outside of real estate, the work I find most rewarding is our involvement in a program called Room in the Inn. Tammie and I and our Adult Sunday School Class volunteer a few times during the winter to provide food for homeless men who come to our church for an overnight stay. Our congregation is one of 180 churches in the greater Nashville area who participate in this program between November 1, and March 31 each year. Last year these congregations provided over 29,000 meals and beds for the homeless! Not only only do we serve them, but we sit with them to share meals and talk with them about everything from the Titans football team to how tough life is on the streets. It's certainly an eye-opener.
Another area where both Tammie and I make a difference is in the Marriage Mentoring program at our church. We are not counselors, but we have gone through training to assist couples who are preparing to enter into the marriage contract as well as those who are struggling in their marriage. So far we have mentored both types of couples. In this program, I think we're making a difference one couple at a time!
When one starts thinking about it, there are so many ways we make a difference where we live and work. I give blood (type A positive if you're interested), I've worked on Habitat Homes, and I lead our Adult Bible Study Class.
I'm a little uncomfortable talking about these things because no one does this sort of stuff in order to be recognized. You do these things because you can, and it's the right thing to do.
