Morris School Searcy AR reunion planned

Guess what?

I am not a boy and I am not an attendee of Morris School for Boys in Searcy AR but I have been invited to their reunion!  The invitation is because of this blog.  I featured several old pictures of the school that were found on ebay from time to time.

Several comments came in from boys who did attend the school.  Somehow they have joined forces and plan to have a get-together at the location that is now used for church services but used to be their school.  The picture above shows boys studying in the library.  That would have been when books were the things you read, not ipads.  I worry that bookcases will soon be a thing of the past.

The leader of the reunion is Rick Zilkey and he would be glad to hear from any of you boys who are now men who attended Morris School.  Any time span is welcome.  His email is zilkfam@yahoo.com and his phone is 501-350-4845.  Call or email him for information.

Here are two other old post card memories of Morris School.

I was a former girlfriend of one of the boys that attended, and will be going to the reunion; I have been in touch with some of the guys from those years, that remembered me or kind of did. ;) Hoping to see some others I haven't seen in years.

I think us Searcy boys resented the Morris School boys for coming to town and stealing our girls.  The girls, on the other hand, were probably glad to see new prospects.

Leah, sounds like a great plan.  Do you think your old boy friend will be at the reunion?

Don, I am sure you Searcy guys did not like those boys hanging around your girl friends but at least there was never any gang-violence as there might be today.  LOL

Brother Rock Larsen

Thanks, Barbara, for providing the old pictures of Morris School for Boys. I can tell those go WAY back, even long before I was there ('69 to '93 )as a teacher and dorm supervisor and eventually principal. Unfortunately I will not be able to make it to the reunion, but I hope it is a great success on Aug. 16! Brother Rock

I remember on Saturday morning the Morris School bus would come to Searcy and the boys were free to do whatever until late afternoon. Some would go to the picture show (Rialto)....and meet up with some of (us) girls.
My main memory of Morris School is getting to go swimming there in their indoor pool. Usually with a group from lst Methodist but also some of the parents could call up the school and if the pool wasn't being used, they would allow a carload of us girls to come out and swim. Searcy had no public pool then, only Harding College pool.

Dear Paula Anne told lots of stories about Morris School. My favorite was when she drove a bunch of girls there to go swimming and drove into a pit and had to be pulled out by a wrecker. She got her driver's license at age 13 and I think she said she was 14 at the time.

I remember the gym floor. It was 2x4's set on end. It made a very hard floor with no give so playing basketball on it really did a job on one's knees. Also, it was almost indestructible so the Fathers would let anyone play on it. One time I took a small U-control airplane out and flew it in the gym where there was no wind. No one objected.

Another memory is that there was a student who liked to catch wild animals and tame them. He had a flying squirrel that he carried around in his pocket.

Br. William Carriere, FSC,

Greetings from Br. DeSales and Br. William Carriere. Br.DeSales taught and was principal at Morris for several years. He is now 77 years old and is still teaching in Southern California. I taught at Morris 1965-66 teaching music and English and played the organ for all the Masses. I was then known as Br. Nicholas. I came back to Morris 1970-71 teaching the same subjects but I had changed my name to William. I am also in Southern California and Executive Director of a Catholic School Accrediting Agency that accredits schools in 11 states and Guam. I am 71 years of age. We both wish all the attendees and other alums well---and if you get to the reunion---a very good time. Both of us have enjoyed all the pictures of Morris as we once knew it. Both of us transferred from the Franciscan Brothers to the Brothers of the Christian Schools in the early 70s.

Anita, perhaps some girls (now women) need to attend this reunion.  Can you get up a group. Don says Paula Anne used to go out there too.

Harold Gene and Don, sounds as if Morris School was friendly with town kids too if they let you enjoy the facilities.

Br. Carriere, I'll bet lots of students will remember you and Br. DeSales.  Thanks for letting us know about your history at Morris School.
