It’s A Wrap! Sealed Air Corp. Moves to Charlotte
It's Not Just About the Bubble Wrap! It’s About the Jobs…The Charlotte Economy...The Charlotte Lifestyle
I suppose that we’re all still a bit more sensitive to happenings in the local economy following several years of focused adaptation to a very stressful recession. Although I know that Charlotte felt the recession far less severely our sister cities (other metro areas), we still felt the pain, nonetheless. Our luxury home market in Charlotte is finally beginning to rebound from the very lean years of 2008 to 2012.
North Carolina's Governor (both past and present) and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce have been tenacious in the pursuit of building our area's economy. One of the largest relocation announcements, MetLife, came at a time that our economy was in the recovery process. MetLife employees have found that Charlotte was a fantastic move for their headquarters. The move of Sealed Air Corp., however, is the largest corporate move in Charlotte relocation history!
Sealed Air Corp., a Fortune 500 company known for making Bubble Wrap, announced 23 JUL 14 that it will move its headquarters to Charlotte, bringing nearly 1,300 (1,262) jobs. The company covers the manufacturing of medical, commercial and industrial products which include shrink wrap, food wrap, packaging materials and even medical supplies such as sterile applications and ostomy bags; their product line seems endless!
The average job salary for Sealed Air Corp.'s employees is $119,482; in 2013, Mecklenburg County’s average pay was $59,046. Sealed Air Corp. also considered Greenville, South Carolina and Atlanta prior to naming Charlotte as it's new headquarters. Half of the new jobs offered by Sealed Air Corp. will likely be transfers from other areas including their offices in New Jersey and South Carolina; the other half of their job force will be hired locally. Sealed Air Corp. employees about 25,000 and serves customers in 175 countries.
Although those close to the company executives predict a South Charlotte move, the Charlotte campus location has yet to be determined but, Sealed Air Corp. expects to be in temporary offices by the beginning of 2015.
“We welcome you to Charlotte. We welcome you to North Carolina,” Governor Pat McCrory said. “This is a place of unlimited opportunity, a place with a great quality of life.”
Sealed Air Corp.'s CEO said that the company chose Charlotte because of its quality of life, climate, schools and also an aggressive recruiting effort from state and local officials. In 2013 Sealed Air Corp. reported a $94 million profit for the year, with a rise in sales of 1.7%, to $7.7 billion. We foresee prosperity and growth for Sealed Air Corp. as they make their way to the Queen City!
WELCOME Sealed Air Corp.! We know you’re going to love it here!
Trivia: Did you know that Sealed Air Corp. invented Bubble Wrap in 1960, simultaneously founding the company. Bubble Wrap now makes up only 2% of the company’s sales.
