I'm Not So Sure ActiveRain is Going To Work For Me Anymore.....

No, the title of this blog is not just a hook. Its not a title just to get you to click and read this blog, only for me to write about how great ActiveRain is....

I'm truly nervous about the future of ActiveRain.

When Trulia acquired ActiveRain I was also nervous , but not like I am now. I just heard that Zillow is making a major push to purchase Trulia, and with it ActiveRain. Look out.

Trulia had a fairly OK reputation for how they treated real estate agents, their blogs on Trulia and their interaction with the website. Yes Trulia applied nofollow tags to links in the agent blogs, but Trulia didn't mess with ActiveRain when they bought the website. They left the community intact. They left our various links alone and didn't apply the nofollow tags to them. They didn't change the RainMaker accounts. They didn't make any changes to capitalize on ActiveRain's members, or at least no changes I'm aware of.

But I don't have the same sunny outlook about what Zillow would do with the ActiveRain community. I believe the giant website would at the very least kill all of our follow links by applying the nofollow tags. Hell, I wouldn't put it past Zillow to close down ActiveRain just to kill the competition individual agents give Zillow on a local level.

Yes, I'm shaking in my boots, and I'm starting to contemplate alternatives to ActiveRain and where to put my focus....

I just read the news on Inman. It certainly is a little scary, no a lot scary. Will be interesting to see what the soon to be corporate giant will do. When does the profit center show up?

Exactly Bill. If this happens Zillow WILL do something with ActiveRain.

I read the news earlier today and wondered how long it will be before we are all working for Zillow in one way or another.  Their plan is to be the Amazon of real estate and they are well on their way.

I agree Norma. They already dominate on search results with most search engines, especially Google.

I think you have every right to be concerned.  When companies exhibit monopoly like powers they often times don't care for the well being of those beneath them as they don't have to.  All bets are off on the monthy rates!

I think it's always been in our best interests to have our own alternatives (e.g. backing up our AR blog posts and having a WP site of our own).  Even Bob Stewart has advocated that periodically.  Even if Z does buy T, I think it might literally be years before they'd get around to figuring out what to do with AR, and that's assuming they'd decide to do anything active at all.

I agree Sharon and Bruce!

Liz and Bill. How would one back up our AR blogs? This seems like something I should be doing!

I read all the hoopla & I wonder if it is just a Z fake press release? They are indeed a strange bunch & I truly believe they will envelop & gobble all those standing in their way. If AR gets eatin up, it will be sad but we can export our copy to a WP site & do just as well. In fact, there are some that have already jumped ship with good results. There is something said about putting all your eggs in one basket. I like the interaction here & that will be shame if that goes away.

Lyn,

The two companies just announced the deal, unfortunately. Could you point me in the right direction for exporting my blogs?
