How Is the Ku Klux Klan Like A Group of Real Estate Agents?
Chapter 2 of the best selling book Freakonomics by Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner is titled “How is the Ku Klux Klan Like A Group of Real Estate Agents?” Really? Is that what most people think of real estate agents? The authors go on to explain that: “A real-estate agent may see you not so much as an ally but as a mark”. (OUCH) I can’t vouch for other places but 99% of the agents and brokers that are Realtors on Kauai are honest hard working individuals who enjoy helping residents with the goals of home ownership. Additionally brokers and agents who are members of the National Association of Realtors abide by the code of ethics. Article 1 of the code is: When representing a buyer, seller, landlord, tenant, or other client as an agent, Realtors pledge themselves to protect the interests of their client. This obligation to the client is primary, but it does not relieve Realtors of their obligation to treat all parties honestly. When serving a buyer, seller, landlord, tenant or other party in a non-agency capacity, Realtors remain obligated to treat all parties honestly.
What other professionals pledge “honesty” to all parties? Well I may be a little defensive and I have to admit there are bad apples, but most of the Realtors on Kauai are trying to make a living by helping clients, often without pay, in a competitive profession.
There are many attributes to look for when choosing a real estate agent. My number one recommendation is to choose an agent or broker who is a Realtor, a member of the Kauai Board of Realtors, Hawaii Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. These Realtors abide by a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. The authors of Freakonomics are wrong we are not a group of monsters.
