The Elk River Economic Development Authority has authorized an art competition devoted to a sculpture competition which focuses on the Powered by Nature theme that the City adopted in 2011.
The public art is considered the final initiative. The City is looking for a solar-powered clock, fountain, tree, sculpture or other public art installation, according to the request for proposals.
The selected artist will be compensated up to $12,000 for their project, which covers transportation to the site, materials and an honorarium to the artist
Artists within 100 miles of Elk River are eligible to participate and must register by September 8 and submit proposals by November 6th, 2014,
There is a judging panel which will review the submissions and make a recommendation to the EDA, which will then make a recommendation to the City Council.
The City Council will choose the final winner by January 20, 2015. The city also has reserved the right to reject all of the proposals.
Assuming a project is chosen, an unveiling of the public art is tentatively planned for July 4, 2015.
Where the art will be located hasn’t been determined. The request for proposals asks each artist to recommend a location on city property for their project.
The selected artist will be compensated up to $12,000 for their project, which covers transportation to the site, materials and an honorarium to the artist.
This is exciting news for the City. I hope that there will be many artists competing, and that there is a great public support of the project.
