There are many factors to consider when buying a home. Some folks really struggle when making home buying decisions and a fast- paced market allows even less time to decide.
A recent study showed that room lighting affects thinking and bright light tends to make people make stronger emotional judgments.
“Volunteers were asked to rate a wide range of things including the spiciness of a chicken wing sauce…the aggressiveness of a fictional character…and their feelings about specific words.
Volunteers exposed to bright light tended to make stronger judgments.
They wanted a spicier wing sauce…thought the fictional character was more aggressive…and felt better about positive words and worse about negative words than people in dimmer light.”
I found this very interesting because as a real estate agent, what do we do when showing a home? We turn on every light, open the shades and let as much light in as possible, all the while hopeful that our buyers will make a decision that’s right for them.
The referenced article was not written specifically for home buying, but for making ANY important decision the article recommended: “Turn down room lighting before making big decisions so that those decisions are less driven by intense emotion”
So there you have it- not sure if it will be helpful, but it sounds like it’s OK to close the blinds and dial down the lighting before leaving a showing and see if it helps in your decision making process!
