West Lafayette IN Purdue University homes for sale

Our colleague Kathleen Daniels wrote a fun, inspirational, and desultory post, There is no law against eating a banana while driving  a few days ago, and her post jogged my memory over a photo I took over a year ago of a rental house in West Lafayette just a couple of blocks from the Purdue University Campus.

One of the leading and most popular property management businesses catering to Purdue Student Rentals uses a banana to brand its business and places the banana on its signs which are no larger than 6-12  square feet on the side of their rentals.  (Which the City of West Lafayette allows)

When this banana appeared on the side of one of its rental properties the question became,  is that a huge violation of the sign ordinance allowed on rental buildings around Purdue, or was it a creative work of art,  albeit slippery branding that is pleasing to the eye?

If you were on the West Lafayette City Council would you allow this as creative and artful expression, or would you be singing a different tune like, Yes We Have No Bananas !

If you are going bananas by paying rent to landlords who peel away your hard earned money from your parents, why not consider buying a  townhouse for sale close to Purdue University and downtown Lafayette  with 2 bedroom en suites and a 2 car garage?   Contact Bruce Walter 765-418-1886 for more information.

Will, the property management company was emboldened this summer to erect a eight foot tall plastic yellow banana on busy State Street in West Lafayette next to the Purdue University campus.  It only lasted a couple of weeks so I guess the City of West Lafayette wasn't going to let them brand their apartments in a very busy, high traffic area with an eight foot tall statue of a banana!

Nice piece, Bruce, especially the last paragraph. I can't believe that big banana has been allowed to remain on the house. Even if mostly students live in the area I would still think they would complain to the city.

Jill, this management company did erect a giant statue of a banana in front of one of their rentals just a block from the student union building on the busiest street.  It was quickly removed, so there is now push back!

Wow - now that's some banana love.  I remember back in High School there was a cheer -  "Go, Bananas, B A N A N A S, Go Bananas, B A N A N A S.  Obviously, someone did.

Cara, they are still testing the limits of what the City of West Lafayette will allow for signage!

OK, Bruce, I see this banana ban as a First Amendment issue.  That banana is just beautiful.  I like it.

Pat, I think it is more attractive than the 8 x 4 foot signs they are allowed to bolt to the side of the building, or even larger, temporary banners.  The area is surrounded by older and newer rental houses and apartment complexes.

Michelle, I wouldn't doubt that California communities have local ordinances against having a large banana on the side of a rental house as hightly regulated as they are in the Golden State.  There does need to be common sense and respecting the property rights of all.

Grace, they got a little smack down from the city when they erected a large statue of a yellow plastic banana just a half block from the Union Building on State Street!

The question is: how many comments and likes do you need to get featured?

AR goes bananas with no logic. Maybe they should have a banana as their logo?

And about painting bananas on the buildings in L.A. county and hood.......I think any the home owner can paint whatever they want on their properties. They might need some sort of a permit( we have so many cities and counties here, each has different rules, must be verified with a city).

Inna Ivchenko  a post about bananas just didn't have the necessary "apeel " for a feature for the powers to be- so no worries!

Inna, I do see painting a banana on the side of a house a major problem if it were in a residential area.  Since it is in a dense rental area where houses are allowed to have signage on the siding this passed the test.

Bruce, great post!  I actually like the banana painted on the house.  Think it adds a little spice to the home and fun art makes life a little more magical.  Imagine a home with this art on it would need to be located in the right neighborhood or area, however or the neighbors might not be so happy about it.

Laura, I do like the art work as well;  it is in a total student area of mult-unit apartments and older homes used strictly as rentals and it beats the ugly advertising signs they are allowed to bolt to the exterior.
