3 Ways to Sharpen Your Strategic Thinking Part 1: Or Sex on the Beach!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

If you are going to respond pro-actively to the ever-changing world we live in, it is important that you sharpen your strategic thinking.   This will help you to outthink your competition.

Take time to reexamine your opinions.  Challenge your own premises, and be open enough to admit you may be wrong.  For instance, many real estate marketing professionals are quick to tell you that print advertising is a colossal waste of money.

In our research and experience we have found that in some luxury markets, print ads are a strong source of leads for many brokers and agents.  The same is true in some communities with 55+ homeowners.

Some luxury marketers are now beginning their campaigns in print first and online second.  This practice is a more effective way to reach their target market.  Research on the subject also shows that the younger generations are responding to print ads favorably.

Realize that opposing views are not negative views, they are just views. Negative views begin, continue and end with insults. Opposing views is simply a view that does not agree with yours. Read articles or have discussions with people with opposing views.  In practicing this you may glean something you are missing in your thinking, and it may actually strengthen your position.

Take time to recharge your mind and learn something new.   Do something different outside of your routine; adapt it as part of your daily job.  This morning on our early beach walk, we walked to the left rather than our usual choice to the right.  It was a treat as there were tide pools to explore, and also seals and sea lions sunbathing on the rocks.

We also saw a sign announcing that the grunion are running this evening.

“Grunion are known for their unusual mating ritual wherein at very high tides, the females come up on to sandy beaches where they dig their tails into the sand to lay their eggs. The male then wraps himself around the female to deposit his sperm and for the next 10 days the grunion eggs remain hidden in the sand. At the next set of high tides, the eggs hatch and the young grunion are washed out to sea.” Wikipedia.

This event occurs for several evenings, and we are going to catch the show.

Stay tuned for Part 2.  We will continue to discuss more ways to expand your strategic thinking, and outthink your competition.

Print or online or both?  We toy with that strategy with every marketing piece - the joy is, being able to determine which works for which communities!  But, then...everything changes!  Constant stats have been the only way we can keep up with the results.  With so many micro areas in our metro region, you really do have to have a 'working knowledge' or you're sure to waste money and/or time!  Great post BTW!  Hugs to you both...

Well, you just had to know that title line would reel them in, Alexandra. . .LOL Very insightful thoughts on sharpening your strategic thinking.  As for the sex on the beach part, that whole experience is grossly overrated.  Sand migrates to places you wouldn't believe, and is quite abrasive!  Just in case you're wondering, I don't know this from personal experience...BUT, I've been told!

Ron & Alexandra you definately caught my attention, in regard to the strategic planning an important consideration is the purpose of the ad may dictate whether you use print or online, are you promoting a property for sale? promoting your business - image-? are you advertising to attract buyer clients? and etc.

Ron and Alexandra - thinking strategically is thinking out of the box and anticipating the future.  And sometimes following a new marketing strategy without analyzing your current and future customers is as bad as doing nothing.  Your point about print is well taken.

Hi Alexandra, So many times people hear comments and opinions from those they look up to and then automatically embrace it, even if it is wrong or at least not a 100% proven direction. There are basics about real estate and consumers that buy and sell it. The idea of marketing is to get peoples attention and print marketing is still very successful doing that. But certain types of people like and read certain types of print material. The Luxury real estate market and even some of the close but not quite luxurious not only attract the rich and famous but many of the want to be luxury owners. The broader distribution publications cover a wide range of properties that also can border on the luxury market. It is the real estate professionals responsibility to understand the demographics of the audience and then seek their attention with beautiful entries that show the property off in it's best light and features. Print material has a very nice shelf life as well.

Great title, catchy and engaging Ron & Alexandra!  Local radio advertising is another way to grab the attention of the masses, though some say it is archaic and ineffective. I have had some successes with it!

It is important to measure your return on current investment.  ASK how the customer heard about you.  print is another form of media that has its place.  One should never put all their eggs into one basket. The over 55 market still likes to read and not everyone is online..imagine that!  Know your market and your options. AND.... sex on the beach--that's a shot isnt it?

Great point Alexandra and Ron. We still have so many people who do not even own a Computer and to make sure you are not missing that segment of the marketplace, print has to be done.  I'm finding these days that even those who do own a computer are finding me from my snail mail more than they are online due to the over abundance of Spam.
