BE CAREFUL WHEN APPROACHING WORK ZONES IN MINNESOTA!
Starting Friday, August 1, 2014, motorists who don’t obey the speed zones in work areas can and likely will be fined $300. The new law was passed during the 2014 state legislative session.
Motorists who do not obey work zone flaggers’ traffic directions also can be charged a $300 fine.
Bringing more attention to the work zone safety issue, the Towards Zero Deaths effort, a multi-agency partnership that uses education, enforcement, engineering and emergency trauma response to promote safe and smart driving behavior, launched a statewide “Orange Cones, No Phones” safety campaign earlier this summer.
The Minnesota TZD partners include the departments of Health, Transportation and Public Safety.
This is very important since we have had numerous officer deaths that I am aware of when drivers do not move over a lane when they see an officer stopped at the side of the road.
When this program launched ten years ago, this Towards Zero Death effort has since helped reduce roadway fatalities by nearly half, from 655 in 2003 to 387 in 2013.
I must commend the legislature for initiating this change, and I also give the TZD a tremendous amount of credit for saving lives of workers, officers and other state employees who might not otherwise be here today!
