DON'T BUY A HOUSE-LIKE DAD BOUGHT A GOAT
My dad was raised in a rural area and the family had several farm animals. He often told us about the goats they had and how they climbed on his new car and made a slide out of it. I guess over the years he forgot about the toll the goats had on his new car.
When I was in about 6th grade, Dad decided we needed to live on a farm. So he bought a place on one acre of land. He had a good spot for a nice garden and another area was fenced so he could raise chickens.
One Saturday morning he took me to the sale barn. This was a place where they auctioned all kinds of livestock. We had gone to buy a goat. We had to wait until the very end of the day for the goats to be auctioned. But, Dad achieved what he went after, he bought a goat. This goat was a nanny and had recently had a kid, because she was giving milk. We loaded her into the back seat of the car and took her home. We turned her loose in the fenced area and watched her. She reared up and started eating the fruit trees and them moved over and eat the rose bushes along the fence. She needed milked but would not stand still so I had to follow her and milk her on the move.
On Monday I went to school. As the school bus was bringing me home, I saw our goat on the road about a quarter mile from home.
Well, Dad decided he had enough fun with the goat and tried to sell it to the neighbors. But there were no takers. On the next Saturday, Dad and I loaded the goat into the back seat of the car and headed back to the sale barn. We had to get there early to register it in. Again, goats were the last ones at the end of the auction. So they brought our goat into the center ring and started the bidding. Now my Dad was a man that always wanted to make some money on anything he dealt with, so he started bidding on our goat to get the price up. Well, he was not so careful, he made the last bid and bought the goat back. We spent all day and had to pay to load our goat in the back seat of the car so we could take it back home.
Dad ended up giving the goat to a neighbor.
That experience taught me a lot about people and how they buy things:
Dad thought he wanted a goat. It was the idea he liked more than the practicality of it. People often buy things without thinking through the consequences of their actions. Many people think having a pool would be wonderful, then they find out a pool must be carefully maintained.
Dad thought he could help the process of selling the goat so it would bring more money.
People often think they can buy a house without the use of a Real Estate agent and will get the house for less. But it seldom works out for the buyer or the seller who uses this strategy.
Sellers often think they can sell the house for whatever they decide, even though the market will not support that price.
Sellers often think if they hold out a little longer they can get a higher price. The results are often not what they had hoped for.
It pays to have the services of a Real Estate agent who knows the market and knows how to market the property to get it sold in the shortest period of time for the most money.
Buyers should use a Real Estate agent that knows the market and will find a property that best fits their needs at the best price.
