The Golden Super Cruise Car Show in Golden, Colorado began about ten years ago when Michael Mason and a friend cruised through the roundabouts on South Golden Road around the Sonic drive-in. They saw this business district as “withering” and thought it could use some attention. 
On the first organized cruise about 60 cars showed up. By the end of that first summer, there were about 500 cars cruising the half mile stretch. This year, there are around 2,200 classic cars, hot rods and exotic vehicles and double or triple that many spectators.
Mason was determined to keep the cruise going and covers some of the costs himself, along with some “carefully accepted donations so that no one could make us do what they wanted just because they gave money”.
Of course, the Golden Super Cruise Car Show in Golden, Colorado has not come without some complaints, mostly from nearby residents having difficulty navigating around the crowds and the noise and exhaust levels. Patrons have been extremely respectful of the traffic laws, though, so that it can continue, and with efforts made with recycling receptacles along the strip, it has been even tidier.
This has not been a “police issue except for the sheer volume of it,” says Golden’s city manager, Mike Bestor. “People who are a behavioral issue, we take care of it pretty fast.” By the way, police have commented that they enjoy the cruise and appreciate it when people thank them.
